Snapshots vs Multis vs ???

Should we ask Muse to make some sort of tutorial video to explain how to use these features effectively? I for one am still confused as to how to set up the snapshots/multis to best effect. Anyone else?

Using the snapshot mode is really very simple. You simply load the sounds you want into different mixer channels, then save different mixer settings, with various combinations of the same set of sounds.

An example: Load a piano VST in mixer channel 1, an electric piano VST in mixer channel 2, an organ in channel 3 and brass in channel 4. Now, bypass channels 2, 3 and 4, leave 1 active and save as a snapshot in patch 1 of a snapshot bank. (Follow the directions on page of the 1.5 release notes: click save in the multi slot, click the bank tab, click the right half of the "new" button, name the snapshot bank and save the patch to patch 1) Then bypass channels 1, 3 and 4, un-bypass channel 2 and save to patch 2 in the same bank. bypass channels 1, 2 and 4, un-bypass channel 3, and save to patch 3. bypass channels 1, 2 and 3, un-bypass channel 4 and save to patch 4.

Now, you can instantly switch between piano, electric piano, organ and brass sounds without waiting for samples to load just by calling up patches 1 (piano) 2 (EP) 3 (organ) or 4 (brass).

To get a bit fancier, set up a split with the piano on the left side of the keyboard and the brass on the right side. Save to patch 5 and you can instantly call up this setting without waiting for samples to load.

Generally, you will not be able to change the sound coming from any of the VSTs, so you will need to save all the sounds you want to have ready and then just call up patches that have different combinations of mutes, splits and layers of the patches you have loaded. You will generally be limited to choosing between various combinations of the 16 sounds you have assigned to the 16 mixer channels.

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. In Kontakt you can load several different instruments and set them to respond to different midi channels. Then, you can set the "play plug-in midi channel" parameter in each patch to play different instruments from the same instance of Kontakt. This also works in VSTs that use Kompakt like EWQL Symphonic Orchestra.

Another way to get more sounds from a snapshot bank is to use soft synths that will respond to midi program change messages, like Pro-53 or B4. If you set the Receptor to only accept program changes on a single channel and check the "route all other channels to source plug-in" box, then you can send patch changes to the Receptor on one channel and patch changes to the plug-in on another channel. You will need a controller capable of doing this, of course. (I've set up a Nord G2 patch to do this)

Thats about all I know about it. I'd like to hear other people's tips and tricks.
