It's a synth you can take with you, nothing more, nothing less. If you're going to get a synth that syncs up with other midi gear or your DAW, get professional gear, not a gameboy.
However, if you're in it for fun and want to make your bus or plane ride more relaxing and enjoyable while exploring synths, that's what this (and pretty much all other synth homebrew I mentioned plus more that deal with sampling) do. They're fun, they're portable and that's that. If at any point you think your DS is suddenly going to become a part of your studio, you're more dillusional than Quaid on Total Recall.
Seriously...
It's not a toy, but it's not professional either. I'm still wondering why everyone wants every piece of gear or what have you to talk to every other piece of gear? If it makes rhythm AND tones, why can't it just BE?
Keep your DAWs and gear separate from gems like this. You'll get more out of the DS/PSP/GBA programs and you'll have less headache trying to get your DAW to marry it. Everyone comes out a winner.
But what do I know? I'm just a bedroom producer dork.
