Adam Van Baker Zebra 2 Soundset

From listening to the demo, this is some amazingly good programming, Adam. VERY impressive. A lot of those patches sound so Virus-like, they could have come right out of the preset banks on my TI. Obviously Howard's Virus emulation patches are excellent, but as he stated, the "trancey" side of the Virus sound is not what he gravitates to, and you've really hit a home run in that department, IMO. The skin is a nice touch, too - the color scheme puts you in mind of programming in Virus Control.
I'm going to have to order these - I don't do trance music per se, but I sometimes use those kinds of patches in other contexts. If you guys keep this up, the TI might end up on eBay, LOL. (I do like the TI quite a bit, but at least 50% of the reason I bought it was pure curiosity - I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.)

Maybe I'll start a "What hardware synth can replace a Zebra" thread over in instruments!djsubject wrote:i love the Desktop TI & think its a great idea!

I got Adam's bank, and right after that, my brother stopped over, so he was here while I was going through some of the new sounds. I was showing him the TI as well and kind of going back and forth, and I think he was as impressed if not more so with Z2 than with the Virus. Having both in front of me, I don't think the Virus has anything on Zebra when it comes to all those hard-attack percussive VA sounds or the fizzy, sizzling trancey filter sweep stuff. The Virus character may be a bit different from the emulations, but not dramatically so...many of Adam's patches capture the essence of that sound very well, and there are some instances where I think I prefer the Z2 sounds to the closest similar patches on the Virus itself.
I don't think it's necessarily a waste having the TI around, because it does have a slightly different overall sonic color and the pool of patches is quite large (always good to have variety). But for anyone lusting after a Virus TI, if you already have Zebra, you're probably not missing out on nearly as much as you may think you are. If I could only have one or the other, I'd keep Zebra.

I don't have a Ti sitting here to compare, but this soundset sounds great. There are not many sounds Zebra cannot do. As more and more high quality presets come out, it becomes more obvious what a vast sonic palette Zebra has.

Thank you guys for the kind words.
Now, im gonna attempt to hijack my own thread:
I am thinking to get me a Virus TI in the not too distant future, and I was wondering should i go with the Snow, or the more pricey Desktop?

I own a TI Desktop and it fully satisfies me.
Guess that even the Snow might be sufficient for me, but it's too expensive for what it offers in relation to the Desktop (only half the dsp power).
And furthermore I bought my Desktop long before the Snow was available.
I also use the Virus as my main "sound card" (a rather expensive sound card
)
You may listen to my live music (of course containing some Virus) here:

E.g. the guitar-like sound playing the melody in the ambient session was done by the Virus.
My tracks were recorded directly from the Virus' SP/DIF output using a plain ol' DAT recorder.
stay tuned

It really depends on how you want to work with it and what kind of a deal you can get on either unit. I opted for the Snow because I prefer on screen programming (I do everything in Virus Control) and also prefer to render parts to audio tracks as I go, so the knobs and extra polyphony would have been largely wasted on me. All told, I saved close to $800 vs. the cost of a re-boxed Desktop, so for me, it was the way to go. But if you're craving the hands-on knobs experience and want to do a lot of arranging "in the box," that's a different story.

I'd say Snow was more for if you're on the move a lot, whereas if you're going to be using quite a few tracks, but based at home or in the studio, then you might be glad of the extra processing power of the desktop.
Even the Desktop will max out before using 16 tracks, could even max out on a few tracks if you're using some CPU intensive sounds with loads of effects.

Hi Adam !
I'm really pleased to learn that you project to buy a Virus TI. I bought mine (VIRUS TI POLAR) one month ago.
I could advise you one thing. Don't buy a SNOW (I know it's not the same price of course)! You would be frustrated ! I tryed it for more than one hour in Paris. The sound is quite good and it sounds "virus". But the "deep fonctions" are less practical to access, and MORE OF THAT, you will not find the "SUB OSC" which is one of the "kick-ass" buttons !!
Anyway, I know your work on V-Station, Z3ta, FM7, and Zebra (I forgot Sylenth !) and I couldn't wait if you plan to provide a real TI soundbank !!!
I will purchase it for sure !
Cheers,
Halcyone

Oh...sorry i thought this was a thread to find info on some Zebra presets? I must have clicked on the VIRUS thread by accident.
edit: yes, I was just kidding.

Does this bank feature X Y preset controls? e.g. for res and cut, reverb and delay, ect....
Seems quite pricey at $~42 USD for 128 presets relative to the other commercial banks (Oldskool: 500+ presets for $69, Zircon's 188 patches for $25, ect...)
Also, does the Skin work well with new Zebra versions? pitty it is $7 when others are free, and you must buy a bank before you can buy it :\
Demo song sounds nice though.

These presets have no XY controls, as said earlier in this thread.GMusic wrote:Does this bank feature X Y preset controls? e.g. for res and cut, reverb and delay, ect....
Maybe he added them later though, I don't know.
I don't own them.

Sounds like a great set of sounds, but I'm in a budget situation where I either buy bank X or bank Y. So I want the most for my dollar. Otherwise, I'd pick this up if $ were not an issue.
We'll see...
