problem with receptor USB midi and midi thru

Hi,

Hoping someone can answer this one!

I am using my receptor with two controller keyboards, one connected to the receptor MIDI in and the other connected by USB. I have the THRU port on receptor connected to a Roland module (which I need for some specific sounds).

I'm using the USB keyboard (an axiom 61) to trigger program changes in my live gigs - not just for receptor, but for the module as well.

Using m-audio's software I've created presets that do prog changes on Channel 1 (where the module is listening) and Channel 2 (where receptor listens).

This works fine for receptor (i.e. PC's work) BUT receptor doesn't seem to transmit the MIDI coming in over USB to its THRU port. Therefore, the module won't do anything.

If I connect the Axiom by regular MIDI cable, it works fine! However, my other keyboard doesn't have USB, so switching them around is not an option.

Receptor MIDI settings are: program changes: channel 2, "route all other..." disabled.

Bottomline: does receptor support MIDI thru over USB?

I believe that it is just the case that midi "in" information received at Receptor's usb port is not passed through the midi thru port - as your set up would seem to suggest. You might try using a midi merger, (I think there have been a couple of other threads suggesting specific products) that way both controllers would be connected to Receptor's midi "in" passing it along and out the thru. good luck

USB will not pass to the MIDI thru. If your keyboard has MIDI out get a merge box from midisolutions.com, works great.

following on from this - i've got an akai mpc1000 and would like to do the following

keyboard - midi out - midi in - receptor - midi out - midi in - akai mpc1000 - speakers

but i've set it up but no sound comes out of the receptor via midi - when i connect the speakers to the receptor it works fine.

can someone kindly point me in the right direction here ?
thanks

Audio is not transmitted over midi. If you want your keyboard to control (or provide midi data to) both the Receptor and the Akai, use the Receptor's midi thru port (midi out from keys to midi in on receptor and midi thru on receptor to midi in on the Akai). With this setup midi data will be available to both receptor and the akai from the keys. (Note: if you are using receptor for some type of software that transmits midi data from receptor itself, this setup will not do that.) For audio, both the receptor and the akai must be hooked up to a mixer, amplifier, speaker etc. If your audio inputs are limited, you could plug the akai's audio outs into receptor's audio ins and then receptor's audio outs into your mixer/amplifier audio system - using receptor as a mixer. I don't know if this helps but good luck.

Thanks for the reply Rick. I don't fully understand why receptor's USB midi port does not forward its incoming data to the THRU port (i.e. in this way it doesn't strike me as a full midi implementation) but I'll see the USB option as just an extra, it's fine that way.

Thanks for the suggestion people, I'll be adding a MIDI merger box to my setup real soon.

The MIDI thru is just a function of the MIDI card, the just passes anything that shows up, kind of like a "T" on a water pipe.

Could you try sending the Axioms USB to the Receptor and Midi direct to the roland? ie/ using the Axioms USB AND MIDI outs simultaneously.

I think this is because you are not connected to the Receptor's MIDI through...

The correct path would be this:

Keyboard MIDI OUT -> Receptor MIDI IN / Receptor MIDI THRU -> MPC MIDI IN / Audio out -> speakers

We use configs like this all the time and it works all the time. Receptor's MIDI OUT port currently does nothing (but it won't be like that forever!)

Cheers
