Direct Install? Still waiting.

Word from someone at Toontrack is that Superior 2.0 won't initially be released for Receptor (no surprise there), and that it wasn't clear it ever would be. He seemed skeptical. If direct install got rolling, of course, that's not a problem.
Now, though, I have no idea what's going on---when it might actually happen, and what VSTs would be direct-installable.
Not having the new Superior for Receptor would be a deal-breaker for me. I hate ebay, so I'll choose "hope" instead.

Superior or EX Drummer would be great too.
But still no sign of Direct Install for End users.

As a beta tester, I can tell you I have successfully installed Komplete 5 and all of its updates, and everything is working on a Receptor rev.C. While the install does take quite a while, the process was relatively uneventful.
It was beneficial to read the instructions thoroughly before starting. On my host connected system, the presence of a virtual DVD driver in addition to the actual DVD drive was a problem until I unloaded it for the duration of the install.
When installing all the downloaded updates, there is the potential for having the updates put the .dll files in a different location from the originals, if one does not take the time to check through all the install location defaults and change them. This looks to me to be an NI issue.
Finally, all of the individual apps have their own Receptorized patches, which must be installed for each separate app, as well as the Komplete patches, which are for multis.
The addition of support for a USB DVD drive would make the process go faster, and the addition of more plugins to the Direct Install roster would also be well received(!) What gets added here will be key to ongoing interest in the Receptor platform.
For me, I purchased a used Receptor, and already had an academic version of Komplete, so the only reasonable and affordable way for me to get Komplete on to my Receptor was via Direct Install, which is why I applied for the original beta. In my opinion it was well worth it. The current version of the system I am running (1.7.20080616) seems quite stable.

Hey Rick, has anyone tried True Pianos with the Direct Install beta? That'd be the only reason I'd go to the trouble of trying a betaMaxReverb wrote:There's open beta, www.museresearch.com/beta if you want to start using Direct Install, now you can, no need to wait.

Currently Direct Install only supports Navtive Instruments plugins, this is a starting point and the beta has gone very well. Support for addtional plugins most certainly will be coming but I do not have a list or dates that I can provide.

This is what will make or break the future of Receptor in my opinion. Like many other users, I've not been using my Receptor as much as I used to as I grew tired of having to faf with difficult installs, registry edition... and I consider myself as an advanced user. My Carillon rack PC with Intel Quad is now the core of my studio. It's very stable (I only use it for music) and I would not hesitate to take it on the road. I have not sold my Receptor and I keep faith in Muse to come up with the goods, but please don't make us wait too long as patience always have its limits. It's sad to see some users like Hybernation starting to turn their back on the Receptor.MaxReverb wrote:Support for addtional plugins most certainly will be coming...

There are many people who don't really care for NI stuff, B4 is poor compared to VB3, as is Elektrik Piano compared to Scarbee. I can't help thinking this update should have been listed as 'Universal NI installer' and not the generic term 'Direct Install'Kermit Jagger wrote:This is what will make or break the future of Receptor in my opinion. I would also be interested in a stable, working VB3. But just for clarity, the Scarbee Keys and Vintage FXs both work great on my Receptor already. The install of both Kontakt 2 and Scarbee was smooth.

I wholeheartedly agree! I don't know when it happened, but I somehow managed to confuse myself into thinking that Direct Install was going to alleviate ALL issues related to installing ANY VSTs onto my Receptor. There are many people who don't really care for NI stuff, B4 is poor compared to VB3, as is Elektrik Piano compared to Scarbee. I think for now I am going to keep it as a BFD box only. My main computer is still plenty fast to handle everything else.

Yes I have the VKGB bundle for Scarbee and Kontakt 2, and it does work like a charm. But I don't care for the Native Instruments err instruments myself. Im gonna get me a Hamichord but I would like VB3 to be fully working on Receptor soon.

Hello, Muse (and anyone else reading this),
I've played around with Direct Install for the past couple of days and I have to admit...it's a piece of programming genius!! (If you know anything about programming that is...)
Listen, I agree that a faster computer (desktop or laptop) can do what Receptor does, but that's the point...nothing out there (that can be purchased today) is similar to the receptor. No Windows b.s. to worry about. (I take care of 50 Windows computers at my day-job and DON'T want another Windows music computer). I like Apple computers but the are TOO PRICEY!
Muse took a HUGE risk...these guys put their "rocketship" on the launchpad, (had a few blunders), but have now put a man on the moon! Muse Research is the NASA for musicians. Taking our music where no VST plugs have gone before (Linux)
The programming that had to be engineered is incredible...
First, if you use the INCLUDED crossover cable (didn't have to make one myself...props!!), the DHCP server in Receptor gives the PC a IP number. (Even while I have a second connection wirelessly to my router in another part of the house)
Second, connect to Receptor with VNC...and Samba for file sharing
Third, web based DirectInstall pages with Survey/Comment link (Nice addition, guys), plug in search that auto-completes, great screenshots and explanations to the process, and finally GREAT INSTRUCTIONS!!
Fourth, reads the OS version on Receptor and puts that number in the web page. Let's me know if I need a newer version or not
Fifth, Wine configuration to use DVD drive in my PC as a virtual drive. (Come on!! Only Apple's MacBook Air does something like this and Muse is NOT as big financially as Apple!!)
Is the process....L o o o o o o o o o o o n n n n n n n n n n n g g g g g g g g g???? YES! YES! YES!
Is the process worth it? YES! YES! YES!
Komplete 5 on Receptor and an older PC that still works doing the DAW stuff, and I'm all set!
Plus, the IK Multimedia announcement has FINALLY brought joyful tears to my eyes...thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Muse, keep up the EXCELLENT work!! Thank you, again!
Sincerely,
Brad
