one more again

for those who want better mono-sound by truepianos

use (MB spatty) it's a free spatial plug in ...it's here in the database
lower the side signal !
afterwards you can use eq and comp and reverb to treat the overall sound.
this trick works for me.

i was surprised too, when i pushed the monobutton and truepianos became
quiter and shittier sounding(phase problems)

i hope this problems will be solved in v2....?

i think it's not acceptable in a commercial(professional) product,
not to be monocompatible.
i'm soundengineer since almost 20 years and wouldn't accept a
pianorecording from myself that has that big phase-problems.

If I stand in front of a real piano and shove a finger in my ear, I get the same result.... I prefer to use both ears :hihi:

I also take TP for what it is, an extremely nice sounding stereo piano simulation

Hi,

We won't be using v1 modules in TruePianos v2. I however can't promise that there won't be any phasing at all with these modules when collapsing to mono as it strongly depends on the mic setup chosen for recording the reference sound. We usually pick the best result out of several recorded setups (setup with multiple mic pairs) and for those we judge the stereo sound which gets priority over mono sound. Recent sampling sessions we've made till now are better mono compatible than our early ones though.

Roel, mono compatibility is huge and should absolutely not be treated as a secondary issue on any professional product IMO. Lack of mono compatability would basically mean that users wouldn't be able to use the product in anything that might end up on television or radio advertising where mono is still common.

I often bounce stereo piano libraries to mono to fit them in busy mixes as well. There's no reason to have a super wide piano when I've got electric guitars in the right and left channels, and vocals, bass, kick and snare down the middle. In these cases, mono pianos are definately preferred for practical reasons, and pretty much a necessity.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that a piano should sound good in mono FIRST, and only then should consideration for stereo be made. I suppose everyone works differently and wants different things from piano libraries, but considering the bulk of users are doing electronic, pop, rock, or even jazz, it seems strange to focus on stereo first, when mono pianos are more common in those genres.

I realize its too late now, but did you try M/S array's for recording the piano samples? If you use an M/S array, and if you build your engine around those recorded tracks, then a completely perfect mono mix can be reproduced by pulling out the figure-8 signal. In the past I have found M/S recordings to sound better too, to my ears, but that is subjective I guess and maybe I was not doing my X/Y setups correctly.

Regarding the other response about the subscription, bla bla bla, it was a stand up response and it sounds like the final 1.x releases will not disappoint. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Looking forward to more TP use, mono or not. B-)

Hi,

We've tried several setups among those that are known for good mono compatibility during recent sessions and mono compatibility. I'm not the person who does the sampling. We have quite capable people for this these days which was different a year ago. Samples are made as a reference for creating so called sample footprints which are only one of many (but very important nonetheless) factors that influence how mono compatible the sound will be in the v1.x engine. Getting the best possible stereo sound however will keep the highest priority.

Perhaps we'll be able to include an option in v2.0 to collapse the sound (towards) mono in a reliable way. It's however too early to promise something like that.

At the moment we're focusing on getting v1.4 out and I prefer not to speculate too much on what might or might not be.

I'm a little confused--the next version will be 1.4? When I go to the TruePiano site, the most recent version I see is version 1.02. Is a version 1.3 available somewhere?

Hi,

As this thread is very busy now I'd like to join in with another suggestion: Keyboard/Hammer noises with adjustable volume.

I own a Roland FP-7 digital piano with a quite nice 88 keys hammer action keyboard. This keyboard alone with no electronic sounds produces a warm key action sound with contributes to the feeling of a real hardware instrument. When I control TruePianos with the FP-7, I'm almost overwhelmed by the playability and feeling of a real hardware instrument. When played with headphones, some of the feeling is already lost. And when played with my live gigging masterkeyboard, an old Korg Wavestation wit 61 weighted plastic keys, the feeling is considerably reduced. Nevertheless, it is by far the best I found for playing and gigging.

Therefore, I use a part of the awful piano in Steinberg Hypersonic in parallel to generate some key action noises on attack and key release which for me greatly enhances the feel of sitting in front of a real acoustic instrument.

Anyway, the sound of the Roland FP-7 resembles me very much in terms of character and playability on the TruePianos. I guess they use some similar technology like TreuPianos. Sure its not a multigigabyte sample library inside, so Roland also needs some kind of basic samples with added modeling. Or did you ...?

Regards,
Angel

1+ for hammer thump, and with the ability to choose different thump samples.

Hi Jake,

The last public version is indeed v1.0.2. There have been quite some changes to the engine however, the new module and other things justify a v1.4 numbering according to us. There also have been several 'silent' but public releases the last half year. We tend to release and announce an update publicly when there is a collection of common useful changes instead of releasing a build with a new version number and press release every month.

Examples of such releases are fixes for upcoming issues like e.g. one that would have been triggered by installing on Vista SP1 or undocumented switches for hardware specific issues with older Technics keyboards. If a customer contacts us with a problem we have a fix build into the engine for we provide it to him/her with a method to activate it and otherwise if possible make a new build of the software addressing the issue.

There is little reason to bother all customers about such things all the time nor does it make sense to fill up the GUI with options that only 1 out of 100-200 people need. If there is such issue we'll usually be contacted and we'll see what we can do to help.

Hi,

Allowing to tweak the loudness level of the thump or exchanging it for another one is unlikely to happen. The next step would be adjusting key noise levels/samples and other requests like changing the size of the piano etc..

TruePianos is not a building block for designing your own piano. There is a certain other decent virtual piano instruments that allows you to do that already. The more elements that are taken out of the main chain the bigger the risk that the sound becomes (slightly) synthesized which is not somewhere we want to go for v2.0.

The v1 GUI will be probably be frozen when the v1.4 update is released so it won't happen with the current branch of TruePianos either.

Please show me these people who listen to radio and tv in mono. they must be over 60 years old. Do you realize it is July of 2008?

Here in USA, all analog cable tv is being converted to digital which broadcasts everything in stereo or better.
