Art Evans wrote:Should he? Why? You're making some pretty sweeping assumptions about his personal and business objectives.
Why? So Reaper would have the same baseline as other DAWS and then put in the "cool" stuff. Not making any assumptions - just suggestions as to what I want from Reaper, thought that was implied here - IMO
Art Evans wrote:Your advice sounds like a pretty good way to stifle his creativity and/or turn Reaper into yet another lookalike DAW.
Not really. I'm sure Justin has some sort of list of features/roadmap that he works from, not just "being creative" in some unstructured way that you describe. You can have structure and overall design but still be wildly creative.

It would be just fine with me if Reaper had half the features of some of the "lookalike" DAWS.
C-Note wrote:Throw in a few unique features now and then to get eyes and dollars from all the seasoned DAW users.
Art Evans wrote:You clearly have no idea about the way Cockos works.
Don't really care - just want what I want to make Reaper usable for me.

Art Evans wrote:If that kind of "let's milk the customers" way of doing things is what you admire, that explains why you may have fallen for it from the other companies you've bought all those "top level DAWs" from.
Who said anything about milking the customers? Again, get Reaper to a reasonable baseline then add some unique features, right now all those supposedly "cool" features like the routing matrix are not that cool to me.

C-Note wrote:I think the thing that is irritating about these "Great new improvements in Reaper" threads is that so many of the new improvements are not new at all - just new to Reaper and not in areas that matter to me and some others who have many top level DAWS already.
Art Evans wrote:But it does matter to you. You're interested not only enough to read about it, but to bother to post about it too. You say you want Reaper to cover the basics. This is what some of this release is about. But you want that kept quiet? Why?
You are out of context there Art, the new features that Reaper gets every so many releases are usually not what I would want. However I am interested in Reaper - to see Reaper get the features I want as stated before.

C-Note wrote:I truely could complete all my projects in Cubase, Logic, Sonar, DP, PT, Samplitude and even Live but never in Reaper as it currently exists.
Art Evans wrote:Well, that's good to know. I can and do complete all my projects in Reaper, and all the better with each new release. So I won't need to spend the money you've spent.
Well it's not really about the money for me. If I remember correctly you do all audio recording, right?
So Reaper's feature set works for you - great, not for me, thats the point.

C-Note wrote:Two years ago Reaper appeared to be moving fast in the direction of being a complete DAW but the line of "wait until tomorrow" is now old and worn. Justin could make Reaper the brightest star in the DAW world and may truely have that intention but until the basics are covered to the level of the current top DAW players Reaper will just be another new kid in town looking for some attention.
Art Evans wrote:Two years ago Reaper was very new and the notion that it then "appeared to be moving fast in the direction of being a complete DAW" is pretty daft. What made you think that?
Jeez, go back and look at the release schedule. Self explanitory.

Art Evans wrote:In your opinion, given that you've clearly an expert in the matter, which of the current top DAW players had reached Reaper's current overall state of development after about two and a half years into their development?
Well since I do make my living using DAWS I might be an expert but mostly would just like to see Reaper work better for me, hence my "opinions" and suggestions.
Art Evans wrote:You're also assuming that Reaper users are first-time DAW users
Never said that - you own that one.
Art Evans wrote: A little reading in the Reaper forums would show you that a significant number of Reaper users find it better in many respects for the tasks they need to accomplish than the programs they were using before. Doesn't that completely undermine just about everything you've said?
Nope, from reading the Reaper forums I got that most Reaper users do a minimal amount of midi - which fits in perfectly with the "Audio Centric" theme of Reaper.
Art Evans wrote:If only people took the trouble to read the sticky thread at the top of this forum and reflect that there is no single perfect 'DAW' program, and there never will be. Reaper is a tool that is very good for certain jobs. As time goes by, it gets better for doing some of those jobs, and it becomes usable for doing others it wasn't good for before, and that's worth people knowing. If you didn't want it discussed until it fulfilled your arbitrary notion of a perfect DAW - well, sorry, just avoid threads with the word Reaper in the title.
Reaper is a long way from perfect...Never said I didn't want Reaper discussed, but not ready to worship at the Reaper shrine of love and light just yet either. You are obviously happy with Reaper but I am not. I have expressed my opinions here - as a registered Reaper owner - just like you.

Bleh! They've been focusing on audio stuff for two years with virtually no usable midi improvements since import midi was added. (two years ago)

Reaper is a baby in midi, workflow and Gui...
+1!!!!

wake me up when Reaper is as good in midi than it is with audio...

Im i the only one who cant fcking get used to the interface?

I tried so many times. Its seriously ANNOYING. The mouse behavior is totally unlogical for me.
When i want to select multiple things i have to use the right click, but to add single selections Ctrl+leftclick. If i want to deselect, and click to an empty space the play cursor jumps there, the selection remains. Not to mention that TERRIBLE thing where you allways modify the loop points with left click drag. (ok i can turn off the link, but that causes other troubles) Why cant i set the loop range on the timeline? That would leave a lot more options for the editing window.

Ahh it must be cause im so used to Cubendo style editing, but that cant be any better for me. I have asked for these features many times almost 2 years ago, and i have seen quite some people asking for this, without a single response. dunno why.

It could be the best daw. if it would be usable at all.

Attention Reaper users!

Attention Reaper users!

Back to you beds! Back to your beds!

Seriously though, it amuses me no end that so much energy is spent (on the Reaper forums) dissing the puerile bickering that goes on here, yet given half a chance (such as a Reaper update) you all come storming over here to restart the endlessly un-entertaining, tremendously tedious, profoundly predictable Reaper boasts/arguments.

Hurry up and shhh!

Hmm, about halfway through writing music for an album of elevator music, in midi, then record in audio.

Then we get a big update that improves my workflow even further.

Then i find out i have more actions to use, which improves the workflow even further.

Then i spent a long night incorporating the new actions i chose to use, and that improved the workflow even further.

Then i find the new actions replace three macros, so i'm now 3 more keystrokes in front, improving the workflow further.

Then i discover the new scrub feature, which is more accurate and consistent than either my old grundig autosync reel to reel, or the fairlight, can be mapped to my supersmooth mod wheel, improving the workflow further.

Then i discover more actions for the midi editor, improving my workflow even further.

I finally dumped the wretched mouse a week ago, and with a tablet, qwerty, and midi keyboard, get twice as much done as before.

Great update, and as one who's practised using keystrokes, even more great components to add to the toolbox.

Looking foward to getting this album finished even quicker, and going onto the next one.

And that's what it's all about for me. More time writing music, quickly and effectively, and less time tinkering under the hood.

Reaper works, and just got a lot better. I'm looking forward to the Reaper midi development that will come inevitably, as i'm sure it will be as good as the superb audio tools, but the midi is quite usuable now, and with some effort on the part of the user, with developing and managing a good workflow, has much that isn't always readily apparent.

No crashes, no glitches, no timing issues.

My thanks to the Reaper team for making my work even more efficient...

This is a most enjoyable journey.....

Alex.

Oh, i almost forgot.
I'm doing this in Reaper, in Wine, in Linux, which speaks volumes for the decent construction of the app as well.

Hard to find something wrong here, imho.

Strange.. I had the exact opposite experience. Trying cubase it took me forever to figure out and learn to use the editing, which I still never got the hold of.

With reaper everything was instantly intuitive and simple.

We all work different ways. I guess that's why there are different hosts available :)

I couldn't agree more, Art. The idea of "hiring a project manager" seems pretty all that Justin and his team wouldn't want to do. And there are thousands of users who like that attitude.

These debates about Reaper get a wee bit boring, as it is usually more about "hey my mum is better than yours!" than about substantial discussion. I pretty much understand that some don't care about Reaper. Why should they, if they are happy with Tracktion or Live or Cubase or Podium or, you get the picture :hihi:.
If people want to start and finish a song with Reaper, they of course can. Yes. Sometimes, as Reaper is young (and Ableton and Cubase are old) you'd need some freeware or what you bought in addition (for example using Audacity or wavosaur as audio-editor for free, or Soundforge and others not free). I am looking forward to some midi-features being implemented, yes. But as long as it isn't that way, I just think like amused here and think "this will come". The time you need for example, to export your midi into another midi program and do things and get back to Reaper might be too much for some musicians. Okay, that's musician's choice, and perfectly understandable! But doing some works like this requires much less time than posting here most of the time :D. That's the way it is with new hosts. And I wouldn't have argued with any user of Ableton 3 who told me he loved his program even though vst wasn't supported. If she/he loves it, gets the music going, what is wrong with that??

And concerning posting the "new features" - I am mightily happy someone posted news about Podium here. So am I if a new guitar ampsim is around, and so am I if many new features are built into Reaper. What is a problem here, people  ? What on earth are we for spoilt madmen to think of that as a "problem"??? (shudder :x). Indeed, if some Reaper-users always came to blurb about new features in another host, I'd understand this. But what the heck is going on here???

I'm off now to test the new features. :ud:

Search the cockos forums for the word midiot(s) which means idiots who need midi to make music... and you'll understand why midi stagnates in this app.

Search for cubendo as well and you'll reap more or less the same sweeping derogative comments/generalizations coming from the cockos team.

Well that's an easily verifiable/falsifiable statement. I found 57 posts in total out of the whole forum and the vast majority are people referring to themselves asking for help (e.g. " I've wondered about this on occasion when working with MIDI in my projects. I'm entirely a MIDIot and don't do much with recorded audio, so this is a big deal for me ;)")

http://forum.cockos.com/search.php?searchid=570255

Regrading Cubendo - I've seen as much praise as I have criticism and certainly no different from here.

Post

I thought a midiot was some who rarely uses midi and so is largely ignorant about it.
