Seriously though, it amuses me no end that so much energy is spent (on the Reaper forums) dissing the puerile bickering that goes on here, yet given half a chance (such as a Reaper update) you all come storming over here to restart the endlessly un-entertaining, tremendously tedious, profoundly predictable Reaper boasts/arguments.

Somehow whenever I see yet another post on why Reaper doesn't work for Koolkeys, I get this inexplicable urge to push his buttons...

I know you are still kidding around just a bit here, but here goes.

"Yet another" would imply that I post a lot of them. It's odd though, because outside of individual threads like this one where I am REPLYING to people such as yourself over the course of the thread, I don't do it. You won't find it. And even these threads aren't exactly around all the time. So button pushing aside, you must be seeing things.

Besides, I HAVE posted in the past the reasons, with backing, why I don't like Reaper. I won't go into the details right now because I'd probably be labeled as "not letting go". But those requests didn't go over too well at Cockos Inc. And I've put out detailed descriptions of other issues since then. I've spent many posts trying to assist in explaining features and giving Reaper users more information about a cool feature or two, which they later asked for and it was implemented.

You only seem to mention the negative posts though. Not the ones where I have recommended Reaper, or anything positive. No, Reaper doesn't work for me the way other hosts do. But it seems that my participation in these threads bothers you, and I don't know why. I don't really go to the Reaper forums much since apparently some users don't want me there either. But regardless of your apparent impression of me, it's not always as you think.

I don't mind my buttons being pushed. Go ahead. Everyone's got them, and in these threads it seems they all get pushed(yours as well). But if that's your main goal with the statements you have made, and if you still think my presence in this thread is nothing more than a nuisance, I'm sorry. You can think what you want about all of it and it won't offend me. But at least make an effort to get the whole picture please.

I'll tell you what I cannot stand about Reaper; the one thing that really gets my goat almost to the point of switching back to Cubase - these embarrassing boast/bicker-fests.

I like Reaper also - a whole lot, I bought a license - and I'm also a regular critic. Perhaps one of the biggest critics among the regular forum members. I think people should just let others (non-users whatever) state their criticisms and just let it be. Some people will love it and some will hate it... and some will do both. I love the audio handling and hate the midi.

There is so much misinformation and assumption flying around it's just silly. Reaper is a great audio recorder mixer... it performs very well and it can do professional work. Reaper is not yet on par *as a professional audio/midi workstation package* with the likes of Logic, Samp, Cubase, Sonar etc, etc. Some people that need more comprehensive midi will come away unimpressed by that side of it.

So what? Let it be? Walk away? It will be one day, just not today.

People don't by Wavelab to assemble drum tracks. It can't yet even do in some cases what daw sample editors do let alone what a dedicated editor can do. If you have to ask an Auditon user what he can't do in Reaper instead... then you don't know Audition.

Small Example: in a more developed daw host (not a dedicated editor, a daw host) you can draw out digital distortion in a sample editor, not just really short pops and clicks but milleseconds of distortion... draw it right out of the waveform. That's a level of audio editing that Reaper hasn't acheived yet.

Some people point to a multi-cpu test as proof of it outperforming other daws in that regard (which is great as it does in many ways) but also neglect to mention that there are real-world circumstances where it will only use one core and only a fraction of the available cpu. They never mention that part.

Their doing a great job catching up and the dev team are a fantastic group of very talented and very nice guys. I love those guys... and I love the product but it's not yet done for many people. Discounting potential users legitimate complaints doesn't help anyone.

I mean honestly, you can't even export a midi file from the timeline and with more than 16 parts... yet some will tell a Logic user... "I don't miss anything... the midi is fine for me..." As if that means anything to user X. Be realistic here and stop the wars. It's catching up. Let it be.

It's deserving of great praise (timestretching, pitching, track rendering for example whoops Cubase's ass like a crack whore... ), and legitimate criticsm, with the latter being necessary because of the constant comparisons to much more developed products as a whole. You can't claim it does what Logic version 100 does and not expect to hear criticism of what it can't do.

I love it dearly though... very much.

IMHO Reaper is truly superb - far the best option in its price range, and as good as stuff more than twice the price. I have recommended it quite a bit to students and other musicians who don't already own suitable software.

BUT it is not better than everything else on the market - it does not *kill* the competition in the way that pipelineaudio, bevoss and some other advocates seem to claim here. So naturally when I tried it there was a mixture of being impressed with how good it was, PLUS disappointed that it didn't live up to that hype. It doesn't offer stuff that my existing setup fails to provide, and hence there is no need for me to buy it

So when I read comments from people saying that it can do (for example) everything a dedicated audio editor like Audition will do, then I see that for the BS it clearly is, and will often comment. I'm pretty sure that koolkeys is much the same, and that is what Lunch Money was also getting at before.

For the record I looked at this thread to see if the features I have requested on the Cockos forum have been added: specifically snap-to-zero-crossings, and REX support. After however many pages, I still don't have any answers to those questions from the Reaper users.

I only actually posted in the thread because Art decided to slag off Adobe Audition in a way that I felt was unfair and unecessary (to be fair though, virtually everything else he has said here has been very reasonable and helpful ).

I just wish that Reaper users could discuss updates/etc without this apparent need to criticise everything else so harshly and with such boring regularity.

You know.. I've got a Reaper license and I keep installing the OSX updates on my machine. But every time I go into it and try to use it the way I use Logic, it fails on me and I shut it down again (or it does that itself after a few minutes).

The thing is though, that's what happens when I try to start a midi/softsynth-heavy project. At the moment, on OSX, it's just not capable of handling that.

Recently though I started doing some remixes, just for the fun of it and to get me back in a music-making mood.. and all of a sudden I got it. It's effin' great at handling audio! I spent 4 hours in it yesterday, learning the shortcuts, doing all sort of audio edits, etc. and it was brilliant. I still have issues regarding some aspects of the UI that often interfere with quick edits, but apart from that it was a breath of fresh air.

I certainly understand how some people can get passionate about it. I can also understand how it can frustrate others.

.. and there you have it. It's REAPER, not Logic. Neither is Cubendo logic nor logical.

Use Reaper as it is and don't compare. If you like it fine, if you don't fine.

Say what? Where did I put down another host here? In fact, try and find any post at kvr where I do...I've got no interest in that.

btw I just use a real tiny fade in place of snap to zero crossings, seems to do the same trick for me (my editing needs are probably way different to yours though)
