I originally posted this about 4 hours ago in "Everything Else" for some reason - I don't know:) Anyway 43 views - 0 replies. So I'm posting here. Do I need to inform a moderator?
First of all Polybius's emerging set of Zebra patches sound very good from the few I heard that were posted for download. Check them out. I'll def. purchase when they're finished:
www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221735
Here though is my topic. I saw a new doctor within the last couple of weeks. While there I agreed to have my hearing checked as my family harasses, (the asses), me cause I've lost upper frequency hearing ability. The doctor said that I had significant hearing loss, I said "did you just call me a silly albatross?" Naw, I jest. But I got home and said that it bothered me that he used the word "significant". My smart-ass son said : "Would you have preferred the word "severe?". See what I have to put up with? I started listening to loud rock in 1970 - Concerts, under headphones where others' in the room could hear the music, it was so loud. So it may have been less than perfect before, but I def. screwed it up more.
Now to tie in the title of the thread - When I listen to "Crickets" under FX on Zebra from Polybius's patches I pretty much lose the crickets going from F4 to Gb4 on a 5-octave built-in keyboard using SaviHost or MiniHost. I'm not sure if that's the right way to identify the notes but I'll just say it's at the 2nd Gb from the right end where I lose the little buggers. 1/4 or 1/2 volume on my generic dell desktop speakers - approx. 3' away.
How screwed am I? I'm really kinda concerned.

Make a synth patch to sweep the largest hi frequency range, sit with someone and tell them when you can't hear the noise on the hi-sweep - this will give you a good clear picture of the problem. Don't use headphones and quick the noise down on speakers
Apparently they say when you get a ringing in the ears, after a loud noise, that ringing sound is made by the dying cells that pick up that range, so whatever you get a ringing enjoy it, as it is the last time you will hear that range.
I said... IT'S THE LAST TIME YOU'LL HEAR THAT RANGE.
Sorry, couldn't hold back on that one. You did it first...

Yes I did. It's OK, I value humor over most things.
Yeah, I don't use headphones anymore. I keep volume moderate to low. And do like the doc. suggested: don't have the TV on for background noise. Don't use the car radio a lot, That last thing I'd been doing anyway as there's little to listen to on the radio, and this old wagon has a cassette player, etc. Only use CD player in wife's van on a trip if I'm getting tired and everyone else is asleep. That's kinda a safety thing until I pop in one of my son's Trance CDs, and then I realize I'm inchin' toward 100 mph.
I figured my son could oversee my final mastering 'cause he can hear that hi-hat at a much lower level than me.
Thanks for the response,
Greg

Good idea to get someone to help master. When we are young we do a lot of silly things that the older smarter version of use need to pay for. Should be the other way around. Atleast you have an excuse to tell the wife to stop nagging, and the old 'didn't hear you' excuse is something we all wish for. The kids, they will start to make humming noise to freak you out, nip that one right away. I'm more of a visual person, and I had a scare with my eyes recently, I though then that I could lose anything but my sight, be so awful.mungo-mange wrote:Yes I did. Maybe that is an idea, do you paint or draw, I find it all feels the same when creating Art, sound, film, all comes from the same place - I'm not saying give up sound, but maybe think of replacing some creative urges with quieter replacment, which will help in the long term, and the creative work can feed into each other, and enhance your drive for making good sound with a hunger.

Good advice. All thought's I've had recently. The wife's hip to that excuse. She and my youngest (29) just get pissed if I can't hear a high frequency. It really doesn't come up that often. I was actually surprised to hear the dr. say that.
Yeah lose anything but sight. I want to be able to always SEE my grandchildren as they grow. We could all learn sign language if need be. My best friend already knows it as he worked at the In. School For The Deaf for maybe 10 years. Low level ambient, jazz, "space-music", all fine with me. You're right it's the creation. I did a bunch of pencil drawings of famous guitarists when I was about 18, well four. Did that for about a month, went back to music and tearing up my hearing. I just ran accross them the other day, they're pretty good. I plan to color-copy them, mat them, (4 elliptical openings), frame them, and give to my 4 adult children for Christmas. OK let's cross that off the list. Our oldest is about at my level artistically, youngest, mentioned above, way better than everyone in the family combined. I think he operates in a different dimension than the rest of us. I might start do draw again as well, or resume photography, or learn digital art media, except the youngest excels in all those areas too.
Hell last year I was thinking of taking up amature auto racing. There are lots of guys older than me (52) doing it. I was really surprised.

Don't know if this will help with your hearing, but I've read if you use hydrogen peroxide (2 or 3 drops) in each ear for 10 minutes and then shake it out, it will clean out your ear wax and maybe start fixing your hearing. It can apparently help cure tinnitus as well. Check out www.earthclinic.com

ProductBE - Thanks, I will.
robbie111 - Thanks a bunch for the link. I've been interested in complimentary healing processes and systems for about 16 years. My newest and older doc. are both extremely open-minded as well as a couple Integrative Health complexes I've been to. In fact I'm trying to help one obtain ongoing funding as they are not-for-profit and recently built a 15 mil. campus in town. Also, about 8 yrs. ago I got acupuncture treatments from a traditional dr. for foot pain, and it worked, and was glad to hear before I started that insurance would pay 80%, so that there must be some validity to it. I'm not really suscibible to suggestion I've found out over the years. Something either works or it doesn't for me. I lost 38 pounds from late Jan. to late March and 49# total using a special tea. Was 212#, now 173#. So I'm really stoked about your link and that HP method possibility. Wow tinnitus. Guitarist Steve Morse has that I think. I'm glad I didn't go that far cause that'd drive me crazy(er), I'll def. keep ya'll posted on that.
So so far everyone can hear the entire 5-octave range of "Crickets"?

Don't worry man, the crickets patch loses audibility in the higher octaves (i hope, otherwise i've got problems too). Blame my poor FM programming skills
The patches are going to be free. However i will accept donations in the form of chicken sandwiches and glazed hams.

Thanks, that really is quite a relief. You got yourself a deal on the donations.
As I'm just beginning to throw myself into programming, I can only hope that I can assimilate the information in Howard's great Virus turoial, and from other sources, even fractionally as well as you have.
I don't know how long you've been at it but your work is very good.
Thanks again for the response, it really has made my day. One less brick-wall right now, if that makes any sense.

Potentially pretty screwed-and I'm speaking from experience (e.g. -74dB @ 1kHz).mungo-mange wrote:How screwed am I? I'm really kinda concerned.
Get thee to an audiologist.
And, there is no cure for tinnintus. It's the result of dead and dying hair cells along the basilar membrane.
Most people wouldn't know good music if it bit them in the ass. –FZ
