It would be nice to have another new theme, i'm just having trouble seeing what kinda theme it should be because atm. i just doing sounds with no purpose in mind other than having fun. But eventually something is bound to show up when i have enough of one type of presets.
Common theme or not, I heard several patches in the new mp3 demo that I could absolutely see myself using in a song. Analog-style patches are cool and always useful, but I really like hearing those kinds of Z2 patches that use less conventional waveforms and wavetable sweeping with interesting modulation (it sounded like there was some of that in there, but then I'm constantly amazed at how even standard analog-style waveforms can be transformed by Z2's modules).

Even if you end up with a batch of sounds that's a totally mixed bag with no readily apparent common thread, hopefully you'll still roll it on out when you have a sufficient number of patches. Like the song says, "Wrap it up, I'll take it!"

Sure. I can appreciate the idea of having a theme, but a lack of one doesn't bother me unduly.... Call it Oldskool 4: Skool's Out for Summer. ;)

A little update on Soundset 4 progress:

I've used an insane amount of time on making a rhythmbox kit to my taste. I wanted the set to sound like all coming from the same rhythmbox. Why go thru so much bother for something which is around free all over the net as samples. Well the word samples is the reason. Ever tried EQ'ing a sampled TR 808 or the likes BD just to find that the sample isnt clean. The typical situation is you put more top on a drum and then reveals some unwanted high freq noise/tones. So this in basics is the reason why i sat down and created a rhythmebox from scratch, now i'm 100 % sure no artifacts will appear no matter how hard i boost any frequency because the drum sounds are super clear and pure.

Ok besides the rhythmebox the work has been around a bleeding trumpet. This has taken forever and the outcome is more like a trombone heh heh but i'll settle for a trombone for now :) Now when making an emulation like a trombone you cant possibly cover all aspect of the sound but what you can do is create something which is GOOD enough for most performances.

Here is a demo snippet of some new sounds, no EQ only limiter and a stereo enhancing thingy on the mix:

http://www.synthtronic.com/demos/Z2_MK_Soundset4_01.mp3

First of all its a journey with the rhythmbox thru various arrangements.

First we hear a nice square/piano like pad
then its the phaser string, the Ride Cymbal and Thee Trombone ;)
after that a spacey dark pad with some echo key hits
and last its some reggeaton with a synth preset sounding like a sample from an old Mirage Sampler with lots of grittyness and the 8 bit flavour all over it.

Ohh and dont mind my lousy Trombone solo play
I'm going to give the rhythmbox hihat a closer look later on and will create a few other sounding cymbals, ohh and a NEW clap. Btw, now that i think of it the box sounds somewhat like the mix done for Rock Your Baby by George McCray, in my head that is. I dont dare listen that title now, what if i'm all wrong heh heh.

Thats about it :)

Thanks guys, :)

It might be an idea to sample the rhythmbox sounds and provide them as a kit, but i'm not sure its necessary because the kick, snare and hihat is 1 single preset with kick on C1, snare on C3 and a shared closed/open hihat on B3. I might be able to squeeze one more sound into that preset. Anyway, having these sounds in one preset helps alot when programming beats since you will be working with only one midi track for the beat instead of working with 3 instances and 3 midi tracks.

Wow, very impressive indeed! A drumkit in one preset? I'd be very interested in seeing how that's perceived.

That demo song you just made should be on the official site, it really demonstrates the versatility of Zebra.

Hi Polybius

The Oldskool Demo presets have a preset that demonstrates a drumkit in one preset.

http://www.synthtronic.com/demos/Z2_Oldskool_DEMO.zip

Preset name: Drum-Kits

In basic its the same thing, i split up the keyboard on the various OSC's and start twisting knobs. FM synthesis is the most used type for drums and perc. Since the Noise OSC cant do keysplit i have to use FM noise instead.

Wow thanks for sharing! A lot can be learned from these it seems.

Wow, this is impressive.

Zebra is really a great synth, and with a great sound designer, it can do wonders.

Kudos ;).

Time for a little demo tune again, this time its Ethnic + Sloow Emo Pads.

http://www.synthtronic.com/demos/Z2_MK_Soundset4_03.mp3

Following presets are played in this order:

Santur overlapped by Tomblas
(This Santur is difficult because it can come out many ways depending on EQ settings. The Tomblas is a perc instrument with a touch of Tablas and Toms)

Natives Drums
(Drums... never can have to many of these)

Forest of Sprites
(This preset can produce overtones by using Modwheel which sounds like a distorted flute)

Tripple Choir
(This patch is 2 Oldskool patches merged into a single preset with a new choir thing added, so infact its 3 choirs in 1 preset)

Night Before Christmas
(This patch just reminds me of Christmas for some reason)

Orchestral EP
(A huge preset with EPiano, Portamento synth, strings and a EP warmer OSC)

Dream Guitar
(A mix between a harp and a jazz guitar with subtle movement underneath)

Thats about it, next time i think it will be some typical synth stuff but with a twist. :)

:D Forest of Sprites is brilliant, Michael! The kind of patch I'd love to have "discovered".

That Christmas bit reminds me of the old song "Try to remember... the kind of September".

Nice stuff, michael... Really... You're not only a good sounddesigner, nope, you're a fantastic musican, too.. Go on, want to hear more.. ;)
