Hi,

Just now, I revisited Mulab after almost eight months and it's obvious that the program is developing in leaps and bounds. Congratulations!

However (you knew there'd be a 'however', didn't you?)...

Why is it that Mulab can't make friends with EZDrummer?

EZD is my go to drum source when starting a new song.

But in the latest Mulab 2 E, at least, the GUI doesn't even appear when I double click the track slot! :-o

The built-in synths do.

I can trigger the EZD sounds via MIDI, so it is instantiated - but why can't I make the GUI come out of hiding?

It's not as if EZD is some obscure freeware - it's a major league drum machine!

So, PLEASE, make EZD a viable alternative, INCLUDING drag'n'drop of patterns from the EZD browser to the track in question!

I have no idea if this works on the PC. Anybody with happt experiences of Mulab and EZD, please chime in!

Best regards,

Joey

On OSX, MU.LAB dropped support for VST plugin editors for vst version lower than 2.4.

The reasons behind this are:

-> VST 2.3 plugs are PPC Only

-> Apple will drop PPC support not too far from here

-> For technical reasons, VST 2.3 plug editors cannot be implemented together with custom MU.LAB controls, what users have been asking for a long time

-> Apple stresses on using the HIView system and dropping the QuickDraw system (both subsystems of OSX). VST 2.3 on OSX is exactly in that area.

So it becomes difficult/unrealistic to ignore this, and keep on investing R&D time in something which is dying anyway.

The best thing which could be done is to open MU.LAB's native editor for VST 2.3 plugins on OSX.

This is the case since MU.LAB 2.0 Test D.

Note that, essentialy, this is not our choice, it's dictated by Apple (and Steinberg, but also they just had to follow Apple).

So if EZ Drummer is a vst 2.3 plugin, MU.LAB on OSX will only open the MU.LAB generic editor.

I just checked some things, and currently (with test E) there is no explicit way to see the vst version of a vst plugin, i'll add such way in the next version.

Last but not least, besides this vst-osx issue, normally drag & drop of midi patterns onto MU.LAB should work fine, both on OSX as on Windows.

Thanks for the very informative reply!

So, in effect, I won't be able to count on using EZ Drummer with its native GUI in MU.LAB until such a time when ToonTracks see fit to update EZD to VST 2.4?

I'd better talk to those guys... ;-)

I suppose there's no chance that MU.LAB will ever support Apple AU:s?

Thanks again for the straight answer!

Best,

Joey

That's correct.

Indeed, i think that it's the responsability of the plug developers to upgrade their vst's to 2.4 if they want to stay up to date on OSX.

Yes, it might be implemented one day.

It also depends on the number of AUs out there that don't exist as VST.

If the overlap between AU and VST is high, then chance gets lower that AU will be added, for obvious reasons. In such case the spared dev-time can be invested in more effective developments.
