Don't taske this the wrong way - I'm really not looking to provoke a reaction - but, I was expecting that there would be many positive posts from users by now.

With a couple of exceptions most of the comments I've read so far are hardly gushing.

Maybe there's not that many people have received Omni yet, or, perhaps, it hasn't quite managed to live up to the hype?

I would like to hear what users think about how Omni sounds. I'm particularly interested in 'electronicky' synthy sounds - how does Omni compare with other VST's at producing punchy basses, greasy analog pads, or ripping leads?

Is there any reason that someone with my taste for strange, spacey, dubby, electronic, funky, synthetic sounds (rather than organic, shiney, twinkley, polished tones - sorry, Per's patch demo left me cold) would want to buy Omni?

Again, please don't take this as a dig at Omni's expense - I am genuinely interested to hear if Omni might be of use to me.

My Omnisphere is due to arrive tomorrow.

I ordered my copy Monday the 15th at 8:55 AM.

More feedback could come in days.

Very few people got them.
Only those who jumped in right away and live in California or those who jumped in immediately and paid for Next Day Air.
And of course you really need at least a few days before you can form an opinion.

All sounds are either from Omnisphere - Modern Hybrid category, except the drums from New Orleans Strut.
How many Omnisphere sounds are being used?

Thanks,

Lawrence

i am so glad to hear that.

I am only half way through disc 4, so probably 2 more hours to go.

You make it sound like you recited this from memory. If so, I'm really impressed :-).

- Glenn Olander joined KVR in April 2002 as GlennO (one of the first 2,600 members). He has posted 146 times as of this writing, the same month the first news item on his synth Crystal appeared following its release.

- Spectrasonics hired Glenn Olander after he'd gotten a lot of attention with Crystal. Posts on the topic first appeared on KVR in September of 2003.

- Crystal was frequently updated until November of 2004. It was updated once more in early 2006 to add compatibility for Intel Macs.

- He was the Principal Software Designer on Stylus RMX and SAGE. Stylus RMX was released in late 2004.

- He and Neal Olander handled Principal Software Development on STEAM and Omnisphere, which was released this week.

I think that his credentials as a software programmer and his longtime association with the forum are pretty much "as good as it gets". He may have only posted 140-150 times but it looks like that was because he was busy getting things done. My hat goes off to him. :)

Lol. You give me too much credit Glenn. I knew about all the events and the rough order, but I had to check the dates and numbers.

Crystal's freeware engine and Eric Persing's track record were the reasons I got interested in RMX even though I'd been scorning loops, so I kept my eyes open. :)

I don't have the session in front of me but I'd say about 6 or 7.

There are limits on how many versions of how many hosts we can test, but it should work fine on a host that advertises VST 2.3 support. I think the post in another thread you're referring to mentioned Cubase SX 2. So, as an example, we've tested with Cubase SX3 and Cubase SX4, but not with Cubase SX2. That doesn't mean it doesn't work with SX2 and I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't, it's just that it's not practical to test with an old version like that, so I can't tell you that I've tried it successfully with SX2.

Windows XP Pro SP 2.
Tested in Xlutop Chainer 1.03
That might answer another question I saw(*); Xlutop Chainer is, as far Im aware, a VST2.3 host.

(*) Someone (somewhere) asked if Omnisphere would run okay on a pre-VST2.4 version of Cubase (I think).

You'll find notes, search tags, and pictures not only for patches, but for the soundsources as well. The notes for patches are generally performance notes while the notes for soundsources are generally about how the sound was made.

And many of them have pretty pictures. You can also search the sound sources by library, if they are part of the bonus content. E.g. search those for "Zimmer" or "Atmosphere" and the sound sources from those libraries appear. :)

There should already be subfolders (Distortion, Keyboards, etc.) under User where you can save patches. Or you can create new subfolders under User and save into those if you like.

:help:

What do i do?
you have to create at least one subfolder in the User patch folder.
I made several ones for pads, leads etc.
when i save a patch into one of these i can recall them with no problem

Many (most?) of the soundsources are velocity-sampled. Some of the soundsources are quite large, but Omnisphere streams samples from disk so they don't need to be entirely loaded into memory.

It has quite a selection of "normal" velocityswitched sounds like great acoustic and electric guitars from the Hans Zimmer lib and amazing vocals and strings.
Also lots of classic mellotron samples.
I also like the several pianosamples including the burning one. They sound very unique and are a great addition even if you have a couple of regular piano samples at your disposal.I have Ivory and Pianotek and can see myself using the Dreampiano a lot.
Reminds me a bit of the New Age piano in my old Kurzweil-it has that same otherwordly quality-very inspiring.
