Setting up to record from an external synth

Hey folks, first off big THANKS for producing such a simple yet full-featured free sequencing application. Very cool!
Unfortunately, even though its supposed to be so simple to use I am still finding myself pretty lost about how to perform some basic tasks. I'm most familiar with Ableton Live, which I enjoyed but the simplicity of MULAB is a bit more attractive.
So anyway, what I want to do is start recording and automating my external synth, an Alesis Ion. So I'd like to record MIDI data for the notation of a sequence, then go in and start automating parameters of the patch in that sequence. I assume this is possible.
I'm using an EMU 1820 for my audio interface, working with ASIO.
All I can manage to do is record MIDI data to a track. I'm unable to hear any of the audio coming from my Ion. It registers in my EMU monitoring app so I know sound is going into my card, I just don't know how to route it so that I can hear it in MULAB. I want to be able to hear it while I'm recording my MIDI sequence (I think this is considered monitoring) and hear it when playing the recorded sequence back.
Some of this is covered in the docs but I've read through them and am still lost.
Once I can actually hear my synth I'll want to start automating the parameters. No idea how to do that though! Thanks for any help!

Create a new Rack, right-click its name and choose "Monitor Audio Input".eric_c wrote:All I can manage to do is record MIDI data to a track. I'm unable to hear any of the audio coming from my Ion. You could also use an existing rack of course, but in such case make sure the audio can stream thru. (i.e. no synths plugged in).
Hope this helps.

Thanks! Sounds much easier than I thought it would be. If I have multiple ASIO channels running (for example, one for a synth and another for a mic) how does the rack now which channel I want to monitor?

MU.LAB doesn't currently do multi-track recording.

You can tell MU.LAB which inputs to listen to/record from via the Record Options dialog -> right-click the record button.eric_c wrote:If I have multiple ASIO channels running (for example, one for a synth and another for a mic) how does the rack now which channel I want to monitor?

Indeed MU.LAB only does single-track recording meaning you can only do a single mono or stereo recording at a time.pljones wrote:MU.LAB doesn't currently do multi-track recording.
But you can make that mono/stereo recording from whatever audio input(s) you want.

Does that mean you can record audio directly from a soft synth? (i.e. without bouncing)
