Are the Kontakt libraries VST instruments?

I would be using the Receptor Pro Jr. to store and play and record all of my KONTAKT samples as well as all of my old samples that were formatted for old samplers such as Ensoniq ASR-10, and Kurzweil 2500S. I know KONTAKT reads and plays them, but does Receptor Pro Junior? I don't think they're considered VST instruments, but I don't know. I couldn't buy the Receptor Pro Jr. only to have it unable to properly play those samples. Could you expand on this for me? Am I locked into buying a limited group of samples for it while restricted from others, the way it used to be when all the samples were preformatted for their individual samplers and only Akai seemed to be universal. Which samples is the Receptor Pro Jr. UNABLE TO PLAY?

The difference between samples and instruments is that samples are just data, where as an instrument contains both data as well as the engine required to play that data. As such, sample data needs only to be installed on a disc and navigated to by a compatible sampler where it will play back just fine. In the case of Kontakt, it is exceptionally good at importing (especially with Kontakt 3 where apparently the import engine uses technology from Chicken Systems). I've imported a lot of different formats into Kontakt 3 and it all works great.micaofboca wrote:I would be using the Receptor Pro Jr. to store and play and record all of my KONTAKT samples as well as all of my old samples that were formatted for old samplers such as Ensoniq ASR-10, and Kurzweil 2500S. Obviously, you need to be able to fit all the data you want to play on the hard drive, but other than that its pretty straight forward.
VST instruments however, such as Kontakt Player-based instruments, have to be installed and authorized before they can be played. These can be installed either using the user-installable method (like with the East West Native-powered plugins) or using Direct install if it is Kontakt player based.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for explaining it to me G. This Receptor looks just too good not to have, especially if I'm going to play so many instruments in KONTAKT. When I bought my Sweetwater Creation Station Plus as my DAW computer I added a gig of RAM (3) since I thought that would handle it, but my SONAR runs sluggishly when I using KONTAKT, but performs beautifully when I use my MOTIF's instruments. Am I going to need to add DIMMS or SIMMS to the Receptor? I heard it was best to buy the edition with KOMPLETE because it was difficult to install KONTAKT by yourself. The 160 machine instead of the 500 Pro Jr. seems adequate even if it is slightly slower. Is there a noticeable difference in the performance of a Receptor and a Pro Jr?
