Thanks a lot for the offer! I'm sure some ideas will pop up when I try out the first release. It's hard to make a contribution of ideas without knowing if it hasn't been already included anyway.Gregjazz wrote:Thanks! Also feel free to contact me at any time if there is anything specific you'd like included in the loop library.
One thing I noticed, though, is that with bass guitar midi files, it is sometimes hard to "get" the rhythm if you don't know what drumpattern it was played with, since both form a rhythmic unit. I had a chance to listen to broomstick bass once, which I didn't like at all, but as far as I remember it implemented the fine idea of adding a basic drumline included for previewing basslines, so you'd get a better idea of the supposed rhythmic feeling. While I don't think anyone would stay with such a drum pattern and alter it anyway, it would be a nice supplement for quicker and easier use. It should be sufficient to add these to odd beats, to some funk or progressive stuff. 4/4 lines for rock or blues should be self-explanatoy...
For now, I'm just curious what you've come up with and really looking forward to have some lines with pre-optimized velocity etc. fit to your library and try it out. For me, the most important thing is to have a couple of basic lines typical for a musical style, played how a bassist (and not a programming keyboarder or guitarist) would play it and come up with it. If there's a chance to articulate some additional ideas after the library has been released, I'd be glad to contact you then.

What I have so far are different genres, tempos, and modes.
I love the idea of including drum patterns with the bass lines!

Glad I could contribute an idea. As to the categories by which you've arranged the files, that's just fine for me. In case you added some odd meter grooves, it could be helpful to mark them as such or put them in a separate category.Gregjazz wrote:What I have so far are different genres, tempos, and modes.

Other than that, I think further ideas will only pop if I can have a closer look into your collection once the loop library is released. Looking forward to the release!

Here's a single finished loop to try out, and hopefully that'll generate more suggestions and ideas for improvement, etc.

It would be nice if there is a tempo (BPM) suggestion in the name of the file added to the style, etc.

Hi Greg, thanks for letting me listen into a small preview of the upcoming library. Unfortunately, the resulting file sounds quite "messy" every now and then I play it (with Kontakt3/Cubase SX/midi channel 1 sent to CoreBass, channel 10 sent to drums). There seemed to be a problem with the separation of the midi channels. Only after I deleted every note that was supposed to play drums (i.e. every note on channel 10) manually, I was able to listen to the loop. Perhaps it's a problem only with my machine. Anyway, I sent you an mp3 to your gmail accout I got with the order, so you can hear what I mean (drums muted).Gregjazz wrote:http://www.orangetreesamples.com/downlo ... xample.zip

I would really like to have a choice between loading a preview file with drums (which is really helpful for previewing), and the same one without drums (so I don't have to manually remove the drum parts every time when I want to use a loop as a basis). A type 1 midifile only would maybe also be sufficient, but a type 0 file only is a little inconvenient.
Also, I'd be glad to have file names that already indicate a suggested tempo or sensible tempo range. But naming the folders accordingly would probably be sufficient, too.
I noticed that there is a quick hammer-on in the fourth bar, which seems to be too quick either for Kontakt, or because of the "tonal development" of the note on the picked fret - only when I play the loop very slow, the hammer on can be identified as such.
I really do like the fact that you included a drum part, so a listener gets the idea of a groove easier. And putting an 8 bar groove together is a great idea, too. I hate those previewing files where you have to load several seperate variations individually an put them after another, so you can get the idea of how it is supposed to sound together, when they are obviously meant to form a multi-bar-groove. The way you did this is much more convenient.
The bass line itself, which I perceive as something between funk and rock, is also quite cool. I'm looking forward to hearing more of this. As for me, it doesn't always have to be a very "prominent" bassline, some minimalistic lines would be fine, too. But this would depent on the style of course, too.
If some major styles (like blues, pop, rock/metal, funk) are covered with a "representative" collection for that style, and maybe some more "exotic" styles (waltz, rockabilly, latin (exotic from my cultural point of view
One last thing that I thought about, is that it is fine to have a natural groove, as if played by a real bass player, and be able to decide later weather I want to adjust/quantize my drums to that groove, or to quantize the bass line to a groove template (for example of some groove I like from EZDrummer).
As to the way to categorize the grooves, maybe you could have a look at the Keyfax "Bottoms Up" Volume (Basslines only), I think a lot of midi file users are used to their way of organizing files. But eventually, I'll go with whatever seems plausible and easy to navigate through.
Nice work so far! Is there a release date planned already?

Ah, I'll use a type 1 MIDI file. (that would be better for previewing, too, right?)kingofthedogs wrote: Hi Greg, thanks for letting me listen into a small preview of the upcoming library. Also, the reason that it sounds "messy" is because the loop was created for the fingered edition of CoreBass, not the picked one (sorry, I failed to specify this).
Ah, I'll do that.kingofthedogs wrote: As to the way to categorize the grooves, maybe you could have a look at the Keyfax "Bottoms Up" Volume (Basslines only), I think a lot of midi file users are used to their way of organizing files.
Nothing I can say for sure in terms of a release date, but my focus is entirely on the loop library now. (I just finished creating some exciting new technology that is going to be used in the upcoming upright bass library)kingofthedogs wrote: Nice work so far! Is there a release date planned already?

I wanted to give you all a quick update on the progress of things--namely the upcoming free loop library.
I've already created a bunch of loops with included drum patterns in lots of genres and tempos. They're really inspiring bass lines and drum grooves, so they'll be great to add to an existing track, or base a new song off of them.
In other news, due to popular vote the next sample library will be an upright bass. In preparation for sampling this instrument, I'm close to finishing some exciting new technology which emphasizes the fretless nature of the upright bass:
http://www.orangetreesamples.com/audio/tango.mp3
(this example uses temporary bass sounds, sampled from my fretless bass guitar)
The technology allows you to intuitively and easily slide from one note to any other in an expressive and fluid movement. And of course, this will come in use when I sample the Jaco fretless (Bass of Doom) library, not to mention if I get involved with sampling bowed string instruments.

Greg, This sounds incredible. Who's playing the tasty keyboard licks? Very nice indeed.

The MIDI loop library (in production) is now online: http://www.orangetreesamples.com/looplibrary.php
There are only loops for CoreBass Cherry, and the library will be expanding as I add new loops. MIDI loops for CoreBass Cherry Picked and CoreBass Cherry Slapped will also be available.
You can download the a single .ZIP file with all the loops for the product (by clicking on the disk icon) or download loops individually.
Enjoy!
