what if the png is PRE-diffused? should work...

PS - you examples are great, sometimes using as a base for further personalization

Yes, finally you did it ! Good job.

Having tried many things, I ended from it that I needed masks and shape to make a success.

Having studied your work, I tried to make a new 3d knob with the famous "riffels" :

This knob was made in a hurry. I think it could be better.

Hope I understand well what you wrote :

I got problems with edges on small size images, so I generally design my button/led/switch about 4 times bigger, I then export and then have it reduced to the correct size with an image editor, with a "very smooth" or "optimum" setting.
That's why My LEDs where so big. :D

Arthur.

contents are great, but you post links in a strange way, neither right or left clicks
save the ,knob file properly...and I always have to mangle the termination! :o

I suggested the diffusion for pngs last night as well. Normally the .pngs are not a problem for me as I will export the entire image and resize it as a compiled image with however many frames I need. Normaly I do not use them at 100% transp I use them to accent a base layer so they might be 12-50% transp and that rough edge doesn't present much of a problem there. I do diffuse them around the edges in Photoshope but I thought it best to load the ones that didn't have that assuming others would do that themselves if that is what they desired, its easier to blur the image then it is to try and get rid of the blur, GIMP should be able to blur the edge for you if you want to try that out.

I cant seem to get it. I seem to only be able to save and image.

The link is to the knob file I uploaded to my website, but somewhere along the way IE interprets it as a PNG file. I'm not sure why this is. It's as though once you left-click on the link and it displays it as a PNG file in the browser, it interprets it as a PNG file from then on.

Just try again,

I don't know which browser you're using, but that's the way I save it from Leslie's link :
Right click on Riffels
Choose "Save target as..." (or similar, I am using french version IE7)
In "Save as" dialog box, scroll File Type combo to "All types *.*"
Change extension from Riffels.png to Riffels.knob
Click Save

If you already downloaded it as a png file, I think renaming in Windows explorer will do the same.
You may have to tell Windows to show extensions, though.
If not, you'll end up with a Riffels.knob.png

Best regards,
Arthur.

Got it thanks. I didn't realize I could that.

Cool. Thanks for the instructions. :)

Scuzzphut-I tried the knobs in Knobman and rendered to .png. They are HUGE. I reloaded them and dialed down the pixel size to the SE 'norm' pixel size. They still seem huge. I wonder what I'm doing wrong??

*****erk-error** I just found out how old my version of Knobman is. Downloading latest version.

what if the png is PRE-diffused? should work...
yeah, of course that works, but imo that is a workaround, as i never know how much i have to diffuse, it interrupts the creative process in an unnecessary way ... i do know that in the end, when the knob is ready ... it interrupts the creative process in an unnecessary way, imo ...
but i'd like to be able to adjust while actually designing the knob ...

i know that, i already explained why i hate that ... ;)

quoted it for you:
brok landers wrote:ok, lemme not only take, but give some in return ...

for the start, here are some normal, easy knobs ... i think the hard task is to do normal, yet interresting knobs ... also, i think the method of doing knobs big, then resizing them to smaller is not the way to do it, as the knobs often lack of detail then, compared to the big one ... i prefer to do them in the size i actually want them to be used ...
