Yes, but it IS up to the developer. You had a couple of bad experiences, I get that. But I think those are the exceptions rather than the rule. The courts wouldn't have to get involved because most devs are fine with giving you more installs if you call/email them. So again, I don't know where the courts HAVE to get involved. Actually, any court you go to would ask if you tried to solve the issue with the developer first. I am just trying to say that you shouldn't judge all devs based on your bad experiences. It's not really fair to them, is it?

i guess its just one of those things and you gotta decide whether or not you can live with it or are totally abhorent to the way it intrudes and cannot use it. Me i like it personally but i fully understand why many loath it 
there are not many people who seem to be indifferent on the topic 
but thats always the case

Interesting reading, only 2 problems :
-- it requires a working Windows, which is exacty what we didn't have in the cases I mentioned
-- it dates from 2004, who knows what they changed since then

Not to mention that if you have a hard drive(internal or external) made by either Seagate or Maxtor, you can get Acronis for free. It's a branded version, but the only requirement is that the hard drive by that manufacturer has to be connected to use the software. You don't even have to use the hard drive itself. It just has to be there somewhere on the system or on a USB or Firewire port or whatever. I use it and it's fantastic. Plus, it lets you browse the disk images you create and the program has the ability to create a boot disk so you can run the entire program upon boot. Great stuff, and free! Fwiw, I got a Kinman for the bridge position of my (cheap but kickass) Yamaha Pacifica tele-alike and another one for the middle position of my Anderson. I Like them a lot more than the Fender noiseless set I have in my G&L. That's interesting, I used to swap pickups all the time from Dimarzio/Duncan/Fender/Rio Grande, you name it... I finally settled on Kinmans also, fantastic tone and quiet.
