Darned watch stopped. (Or I got distracted.) In either case, time's up. XXXL, if and when you register at the FXpansion forums and get your answer on the BFD2 question, let me know and I'll rescind the ban, unlock your threads, and apologize to you.

To participants in the thread, to you I apologize now for the distraction. Carry on. *bow*

Meffy, you're really on patrol today! Good on ya. I was beginnig to wonder how many "How Do I?" threads could be started in one day.

*sigh* Today I have hauled a lot of both literal and figurative cow flop. At least the literal kind can be used to make valuable compost for our garden and yard.

All that and brains too! :hyper:

Sorry, I'll stop now. Back to compression and such.

Darn. Those zombie tags don't work in Opera...

how do i use volcano 2 as a compressor? Anyone fancy doing a tutorial? Btw, can I do cool stuff so for instance once it hits the threshold it lowers the freq of the lp filter too (since compression of bass heavy material tends to bring out the high freqs more) ... and does it do rounded compression like pro-c can?

I have been wondering this too. Even a short explaination would be great.

:help:

You know what? My bad.

I need to study bmanic's Volcano presets first before I ask for help.

I'll try to explain it quickly. All you need to do to get compression in Volcano 2 is to route the Envelope Follower (EF) to either the output or input volume knob and make sure it reduces it (change the modulation control to negative value, " - " ) and that's it.

To make it usable you usually need to turn up the modulated volume control to anything between 7dB and 12dB or even more if you want finer control. Then adjust the modulation control knob to something in the 10 to 30 range for compression.

For more complex compressors you simply create more envelope followers that control something else, like the first envelope controllers attack or release (makes them program dependent) or you could even create a separate envelope follower to control the first modulation control knob to get a different kind of "transfer function" of the compressor (basically makes the "ratio" program dependent, like on Vari-Mu comrpessors).

I'll try to explain a bit better, with pictures, once I have some time. In the mean while, you can download some new presets I've created for Volcano 2 here. They will be included in the factory presets once the next update arrives.

Cheers!

Volcano 2.02 update has been released. It contains tons of new compressor presets. Especially useful are these two:

"Subtle Master Control 01" , for mastering/mix bus. It works best when you load it in dual-mono configuration using Energy XT or a host that allows splitting the channels, like Reaper.

"Drum Smash 05", is basically an universal "squeeze me/control me!" kind of preset. Works very well on single drum hits, drum overheads, vocals, bass, synth lines.. anything that needs to be "controlled" brutally.

"Compressor 01" is a good starting point for most tasks.

Cheers!

If I had the ability to stop it, I wouldn't hesitate for even a second!! It'd be back to good old 70's and 80's dynamic range! :)

Nicolas, what kind of compression are you in need of? If you like smashing things to bits and like extreme settings then I'm affraid the VST/plugin/digital world of compression might not be able to give you exactly what you want. :(

However, for common tasks I think there are lots of good ones. Pro-C from FabFilter is one of them. The new Vienna Suite has a good one as well. It is also worth exploring the free ones like Blockfish, vanilla compressor and Magnus, from smartelectronix, compressor (forgot the name! I'm ashamed.. use it every day!).

Could you post an example of what kind of compression you are looking for?

Cheers!
