I have to admit when I first saw this thread title I had to agree with the sentiment. But I was more concerned for Urs's own sake (and health etc.). It did seem odd to me that with the Zebra updates struggling to be released that he would focus so much energy on something new. But comments from the man himself explain why he needs to diversify, and that seems reasonable to me. Not only reasonable, but actually sensible.

At least I currently own two of his suite of products (still trying to figure out what I would use Filterscape for, being more of a synth than FX guy) and so am benefiting quite nicely still.

Urs, as a developer myself I appreciate just how hard it can be go day after day and change things over and over again, and also I know the importance of being able to switch your mind to new problems.
You're doing an amazing job.

Urs, do you foresee a Zebra 3.0 being released someday? I would be more than happy to pay for a major revision if one came along, both to fund the ongoing development of the platform and because I'm sure it would be worth the money.

So would I.

Post

I would gladly pay up to $50 per major release.

Yeah, I never got into scripting due to lack of docs. How do you find a list of all the parameters? (VoiceCircuit, etc..)

I would have no problem at all paying for major updates. Heck, look at what NI charge for updates to Kontakt and to their synths. Look what Cakewalk charges EVERY YEAR to stay current with Sonar. There is literally nothing else I've used that I find as pleasing overall sonically or as enjoyable to work with as Zebra. Anything that helps keep its development continuing well into the future is a worthwhile investment to me.

Yes, being a dedicated but (perhaps) slightly frustrated developer, he should "know what his users think".

Yeah. hmmm. I think I also was a bit underwhelemed by the resonance on http://www.u-he.com/scripting/ - that's also why I'm not promoting it as much as I should.
I think the lack of resonance was all down to lack of documentation. Not-so-brilliant programmers like me need at least a way in, e.g. a template plus several simple complete .h2p examples with full explanations, before we can do anything. You know it backwards of course - we don't know the basics.

Please charge for Zebra updates (major ones). I demand to pay a small update for Zebrify because I know your love for Zebra2 would grow into fulfillment when there was a monetary reward. And then there would be even more Zebras running around.

Yep. Without a bit more of an API doc and some maturation of the underlying object model it's hobbled.

This being a very civilized discussion overall, and 2X so for KvR in general ha-ha, I feel pretty comfortable commenting.

I had hoped Zebra V2.3 would've been finalized a month or three ago, along with Zebrify and ZebraFx or whatever it'll be called. But, Urs has a life too, and he had what a surgery/medical problem this year AND got married. And really, he's only as far "behind" as the time those things took, *if* we were to work him 50 weeks a year ha-ha.

Between just the constant (overall, plugs/life) available information from Urs himself, and the general quality and customer support, I'm inclined to let it go completely, and let Urs do what Urs does and expect to more or less be rewarded in early to mid 2009. :)

In other words, Urs was working himself to death in 2007 ha-ha, and in 2008, he had to be human a bit. I'm pretty confident Urs is more or less back in the game, and 2009 will be a very bright year for him and his customers (and new wife). Cheers. :)

eeeek, I didn't know this was the case :(

Others said it already - I also wouldn't mind paying for the next major update.

It's not an uncommon thing that companies charge for major updates. Major updates usually represents the result of a massive work effort - and noone works for free...;) besides you've already put out so many new features into 2.3 that you should stop and consider if that's it for 2.3 and move the rest of the planned features into version 3, making it a paid update, and thus earn a bit of well deserved money.

Cheers.

I'm happy now, but the time out has left its traces. I'm still working months behind schedule. That's why things are late.
Now as I got 2 of those teeths right now I fully understand what this means, ouch. Hope it didn't spread, like in my case (too late detected).

Now THAT I can understand too, as a Filterscape-user :D

I see there are always wishes from users (please support ME ME ME first), but no developer on this earth who not only makes money (hopefully enough, with those very user-friendly copy protections!!) but is a musician and loves his products as well would let others persuade himself of changing to do what he really likes.
