I saw a magazine ad last night for a new Receptor model (Electronic Musician magazine, pg.59). Are there any details (price, features, availability) online anywhere? I see nothing on the Muse website.

Hi gang

The ad came out sooner than we expected (!) so the website isn't quite updated yet. The new model is shipping yet, but it should be in a couple of weeks.

Here are some details for you:

Basic packaging is the same, audio I/O is the same, but almost everything else is changed or updated.

We've gone to Dual Core processors, 2.5GHz for the RECEPTOR 2 PRO and 3.0GHz for the PRO MAX. Of course given that these are in a Receptor, you'll get even better performance than you would from a similarly outfitted PC or Mac.

The RECEPTOR 2 PRO has a 500 GB SATA 2 drive, the PRO MAX has a 1 Terabyte drive.

Both models have 800MHz memory, and 3GB of RAM. Both have E-SATA ports that will be supported in a future software update for backup, restore, and RAID operation.

Both models are gigtabit Ethernet, and also have a DVI monitor port.

The units will ship with V1.8 software that is entirely new, and will include Pace CDRM support, as well as a bunch of other low level system improvements and some critical new changes to support future enhancements. 1.8 will also be available to all Receptor users, hopefully by NAMM.

Front panel has new encoders, new milled aluminum knobs, new white-on-blue LCD, and blue power indicator. Power supply is updated and is now energy star compliant, and the cooling system is substantially changed due to the new processor.

Both models will be available as KOMPLETE or Total Workstation versions.

MAP Price in US Dollars of the RECEPTOR 2 PRO is $2599, the PRO MAX will be $3199.

And, keeping with our tradition of keeping everyone happy as best we can, there will be an UPGRADE PROGRAM for ALL Receptor customers so you can get into the latest /greatest at a very fair price if that's important to you.

Please look for an upcoming MUSINGS newsletter that will have more details.
All the best

Hi Bryan,

Kudos for bringing an update to market.

I distinctly recall a message you wrote describing why Muse was not considering multiple processors (ie. something about cache penalties). Could you please describe why the switch to a dual core, and what the benefit will be? Is there some distinct dedication of processors to specific functions?

Thanks,
Kevin L

Hi Bryan,
Glad to see a 2 Gen Receptor. The hardware upgrades, sata, and BackUp/Restore sound like welcome additions. Can it be upgraded beyone 3 Gigs of Ram? Thanks -Vincent

Hi Kevin!

Good memory, and you are correct... most dual / multi processor systems are quite stingy on the cache, thus making the dual core system perform POORER with plugins than with a larger cache single core system. Most people think dual core systems double your performance, thats a bunch of BS, you're lucky to get a 20% overall improvement.

There is a particular line of Intel processors that address this, and provide ample amounts of L2 cache to make the system perform well enough to be used in Receptor.

However, to be honest, in the RECEPTOR 2 hardware, the dual core-ness is just one of the improvements, the move to SATA 2 (300MB/s) and to 800MHz DDR-2 RAM makes for a synergistic enhancement of the entire processing engine.

To be honest, if you are just running a couple of plugins, you probably don't need to upgrade, although you might want to consider going to a SATA drive when you upgrade to V 1.8 in a couple of months. However, if you do film work, or work with massive sample libraries, or are just one of those power hungry people (I can relate) the performance improvement of RECEPTOR 2 is definitely something you'll want to consider, and the upgrade program will be very fair in terms of pricing...

That's encouraging.

Since the devil is in the details, could you please give us some idea as to the reality of "very fair"? Thanks.

Does this have any impact on the Syncro dongles? Any movement on that front? I'd love to have my Korg Legacy working...

I'm pleased to report that the Syncrosoft dongle code will be in the 1.8 release, but we have not dealt with the installer issue yet. I know that's a flaky answer, but the fact is there is huge progress towards making Syncrosoft encrypted software work, but it still may be a little while before it is "officially released" in that regard...

Thanks Bryan.

What major improvments should we expect software-wise on the V1.8 realese?
Any news about program-change-to-source messagese in Snapshots mode?

Hi Roy

The primary changes in 1.8 is an update of the OS and kernel, with very few feature besides SATA support,PACE CDRM support, support for dual core processors, etc. Its primary purpose is to serve as the foundation for all our future features, which will come to fruition in our 2.0 release sometime in 2009.

We are definitely going to be improving snapshots; that is on the 2.0 feature list as well as ton of other things...

All the best

These are great news, thanks again.

I have lots of suggestions for Receptor's mixer screen improvements. Are you still reading the long and winding wish list?

Here's one more vote for Korg Legacy (Digital Edition) in Receptor. Thanks

Great to hear about the improvements, as well as support for Korg Legacy.

One more question. Any idea when Omnisphere and Komplete Classics will be usable on Receptor ?

I am very close to purchasing a Receptor, and do want to run the many sycrosoft protected plugins I own(arturia, legacy dig & anolog,Steinberg etc). I am very happy to see that the software upgrade will apply to the previous genration units, as that is all I can afford at this time (used at that), and greatly appreciate that down the road I will be able to upgrade it with out having to buy an entirely new unit! Please keep at it!
