Would it be possible to have a feature that automatically named the session after the current date and time (of started the project, or last recorded file).

This would make mulab very useful to me so I could quickly open it, record something, save it and close it.

Likewise, it would be nice if there was some sort of feature on top of this that managed a database of sessions based on date/time. So you could browse your projects on a timeline of some sort. That would also make a very clever 'version control' scheme that would be rather easy for users to grasp as they're likely already used to organizing data on a linear timeline :)

To be honnest i don't see the big benefit to invest precious R&D time in such system because:

1) You can put the date/time/version in the filename.

2) You can use the OS file timestamp to sort musessions on the timeline.

Technically, almost everything is possible. But i think this feature has a too high cost/benefit ratio.

Also, us more "creative" types (i.e. those who hate being organised and find the very idea completely stifling) might not like it... ;)

What is this "linear timeline" of which you speak..?

I'm not terribly interested in the database idea, but having the default filename of a new session automatically include a timestamp has value, IMO, for the "quick idea capture" notion that the OP described. As an analog, I use the voice recorder in my PALM to capture ideas when I'm out and about. By default, it names a new recording with the date and time, so I don't have to think up a name or label things "idea #36". Yes, you can sort MUSESSION files by time stamp at the OS level, but the user still has to name the file something when they save it, because Windows (at least) won't let you have multiple files with the same name that only differ by their timestamp (Mac might be different, but I'm guessing not).

And, at the risk of sounding ignorant, it seems like a pretty straightforward thing to implement. :)
