it is recorded that pythagoras' ratio tuning systems were inspired by hearing a smith hammering with two different sized hammers, leading him to weigh the hammers.

ca. 45 BCE Ching Fang in China had calculated the "Arabian Comma". aka the Holdrian Comma.
He stacked 53 natch fifths, transposed 'em down 31 octaves, and the result was to within a ratio of 176777:177147 of the lowest tone. < 23 cents.
some Arab theorists think of the 'rast' maqam (sort of their 'sudddha' or pure scale, kinda sorta natch minor) as multiples of this comma.
