Wider unison

Hey URs,
Well, this request is a little late since 2.3.1 just came out, but perhaps you will take it into consideration.
I was comparing the width of the unisons in some synths and saw that when the stareo width is on, Zebra2 doesnt properly distrubute the voices over the stereo field.
What I mean is that is I have a double unison and width on full, the one voice should be on the right speaker, and the other on the left. When I have 4 voices, the two on the right, should be on the right speaker and the other two on the left.
I have been analysing the unison in zebra2, and when the width is on, it doesnt distribute them fully, just a little. Also, it would be great, if the width would be bi-polar so it could invert the unison in the stereo field if fully left, or fully right.

Hi,
The voices are distributed evenly in the stereo field. In quad mode, one is fully left, one is third way left, one is fully right, one is third way right. Same goes for Eleven. This is how I think it should be.
You don't need a bipolar split because detune is already bipolar. Instead of reversing the stereo spread, you can just reverse the detune.
I'll test if I like the option for a "wider-than-wide" stereo spread. The problem therein is that the pan would not work properly anymore, at least not the way I intended it to.
Cheers,
Urs

Ah yes, you are right about the bi-polar in the detune, I just realised after I posted. So inverting the stereo field is not a problem then.
Anywho, I made a nice analysing for you:

I have compared the virus, massive and zebra2s unison. The only synth I have seen that gets the unison pan right is massive (well for me the "right" way is comparing to the virus
)
You can see that when the pan is full, each unison voice gets its own place in the stereo field, however zebra still, leaves some volume in the other field, wich prevents it from sounding fully wide. When comparing the sounds, it feels like zebra2 is still stuck in the middle and cant fully expand.
If you could fix that, I could finally have a synth to have instead of the virus once and for all! (Well, zebra2 already does, but it would replace it even more lol)

I actually like this approach (sorry adam) for both pan reasons and also solidity of sound in mono. Please don't change it, unless its made as an additional choice to the existing even spread.Urs wrote:Hi,

It helps give Zebra its own sound thats different from the stereo spreads of other synths.

Each to their own, but an option to switch between two spread modes would be extremely appreciated, so that it doesnt screw up existing patches. Maybe urs can add a button to enable a different mode, just like he did with the voice drift.

I guess that's a matter of taste. IMO it should be up to the user how wide he wants the sound to be. So, the width you get now with 100% spread, should already be reached with 50% or 66% spread.Urs wrote:The voices are distributed evenly in the stereo field. This way Arksun could still get his mono compatibility and Adam and I wouldn't have to waste another OSC to get a fully spreaded sound.
Sorry for this little OT question, but what exactly happens, when "voice drift" is enabled? I tested it with a simple saw and I noticed a slight change of the sound on every keystroke, but I could determine what exactly it is that sounds different.adamtrance wrote:Maybe urs can add a button to enable a different mode, just like he did with the voice drift.

Voice drift pretty much boils down to slightly detuned voices. Just like the Virus does, or a well tuned analogue synth
