Do any of these sound like jen johansson's lead?

How to make that sound...

Here's two lead sounds (each are slightly different) I came up with while trying to emulate Jens Johansson's lead

http://www.progsounds.com/2005/08/21/je ... sson-lead/

I'm using the Bristol soft-synth's emulation of the Korg Polysix. A big thank you to Nick Copeland, the developer for giving me some tips about synthesis and how to design the lead in Bristol.

One thing to note, There's a bug in the software ATM, that should be fixed next release, namely that the LFO depth doesn't follow the LFO to where it's currently being routed, so unfortunatly, by default it is routed to the VCO, causing some nasty "gliding up and down frequencies".

And yes, I do realise that the high octaves don't sound the best. :-P

Anyway, here's the file.

Personally I prefer the first lead sound. Slightly less modulation of the PulseWidth waveform.

I am soooooooo confused?

Who is Jen Johanssen? I googled the name and couldn't find anything. I don't mean to be offensive, but is this a joke?

Why are you using some buggy standalone software I've never even heard of when there are thousands of great free vst synths that could do this? Why are the pictures in your tutorial of a nord modular, when you are using a polysix? Why are you over complicating things so much? Not to be insulting, but that clip you made sounds nothing like a lead guitar at all. I'm not even going to look at that tutorial, because I'm already frightened by reading the first few sentences of it.

Anyway here is a lead guitar patch I cooked up in about 10 minutes for you to play around with. It's for synth1, which is a free vsti. It uses the internal distortion for the guitar amp sound, but it will sound a million times more realistic if you run it through an amp simulator like the free and excellent simulanalog jcm900. I just used the distortion in the synth for simplicity. Note, if you use an amp simulator, then TURN OFF the distortion and saturation in the synth. I also recommend using some reverb. Modwheel controls the vibrato.

My keyboard playing is horrible, but here is a clip: (only synth1 and some verb)

Here is the synth1 preset:

Hi,

It's Jens Johansson with an O, not an E. He was a keyboard player for Yngwie Malmsteen between 1984 and 1989 and was the keyboard player for Stratovarious.

The Bristol soft synth is a keyboard synthesizer emulator for linux. Check out http://bristol.sourceforge.net/ for more info. Yes it is a standalone synth, i.e no integration as a VST, but I could easily sequence my stuff via Rosegarden (a midi sequencer) and JACK (a low latency sound server).

I didn't make that tutorial, it was the one I used as a reference while I was creating the lead. Speaking of which, I asked if my lead was at all similar to jens'. Take a listen to this jam by him. http://www.albertors.com/horizon_jens.mp3

I wasn't trying to emulate a lead guitar.

Also, I tend to shy away from VSTs/VSTIs on linux because of some bad experiences with them and WINE (a windows compatability layer for linux), but most VSTIs more or less work now.

Cheers.

Also, Bristol is in active development, so bugs still exist.

Current version is 0.30.2 and 0.30.3, according to Nick, should be out by the 25th. Not that version numbers matter, Bristol is quite stable, despite a few bugs.

Yeah, I made a typo, but I googled the name in the title of your post and got nothing. Actually, this thread here is the first thing that comes up on google for that name, so you should be proud of yourself, because you're his biggest fan!

Ummm, sorry to break it to you, but that tutorial is about creating a lead guitar sound in a synth. And, in that clip you posted of Jens jamming, what I hear is a synth distinctly playing a lead guitar sound. I really think you are confused or something. You make no sense man.

And your clip sounds nothing like this guy. Seriously, is this an elaborate hoax?

The first result I get from google is to his homepage.

Also, Jens created his lead sound on a korg polysix.

I posted my clip to get feedback from other people. (admittedly it does lack distortion)

Actually, I was wrong, it's the 2nd link:

It doesn't really matter. There is so much guitar amp sim distortion on it that any VA will sound like that if you program it right. Getting the right amp sim tone is going to be far more important that what synth you use. It's actually even more important than a lot of the synth programming.

Well, I'm giving you feedback... It sounds nothing like jens johansson's leads. Not a single bit.

You need to use a guitar amp sim. It is absolutely essential to getting that sound. Period. Once you run your synth through an amp sim you will see exactly why everything is totally wrong in your attempt, and then you will be able to make the proper adjustments.

Ive been a fan of jen's synth leads for years now.

The synth solo tones on the early tunes like "Evil Eye" and "Trilogy Suite Op 5" sound much different to the example you posted, but i beleive that this is because of note choice and style, and not so much due to tone.

Some of Jen's runs on the early stuff made malmsteen sound like coldplay.

Jen's is an absolutely gifted player and coming to grips with his technique is 9/10ths of the battle.

Basically what im saying is that if you have his notes down it wont really matter what patch you use, it will sound like him.

Good luck man.

or actually, maybe I should've said, does it sound like this:

http://www.progsounds.com/forum/files/l ... ltered.mp3

This is the fully programmed lead sound from this guide, but WITHOUT the distortion effect.
Mine is also without the distortion effect. :-)

and yes, I know that the distortion can dramatically change the sound..
