And here's the GUI I'm currently working on (I'm not much of a GUI designer I guess...), made with KnobMan and SkinMan (and WDL/IPlug)

I wouldn't say that. Looks pretty good to me :)

Thanks, but I just can't get rid of the feeling that it doesn't look right...

Suggestions: With all those different types of numbers, it gets confusing. Perhaps just a dial with a display box below to show the value. I don't know how you made this, or if that's even possible. Black numbers against the knobs may make them stand out more and be easier to read. White/silver(gray) never looks right. Too washed out. Just a thought

This seems to be a good tool to find what goes with what.

Also, maybe add a faint splash of colour to the knobs to help group by function (rather than just row), so Attack/Release/Hold [timing functions] get a whiff of say green, Threshold/Ratio [dynamic characteristic] get a nose of red, Gain/Attenuation [level control] get a breath of purple, and mix gets a dilation of blue. Anything too overpowering would take away from the subtlety, so just dialling in a small amount to suggest a colour would work.

only a suggestion :)

Actually, that was my intitial plan, but I wasn't able to implement it with IPlug... guess I'll have to go dig deeper into the sources for that...

Heh... for gray, the suggested matches are... gray, gray and gray :-P
The off-white text seems readable enough on my screen though...

Hm, interesting suggestion... i'll have to try that

EDIT:
Here's a quick mockup where I just added some colored metallic rings over the knobs in skinman:

Well, I think it works, and making the colour just the rim is pretty subtle :) In concord with osiris, it might be worth investigating a darker colour for the lettering of the values, maybe not as definite as black, but try #A0A0A0 or deeper (#C8C8C8 ?). Using black itself would lose clarity against the parameter names, and too light with the grey would conflict with the back...

Dunno, might not work

the brushed metal bkgd doesnt work with those knobs, and the numerals round the knobs dont suit either

+1 Very difficult to read.

+ the On/Off button should be a button, and not a slider that you have to move for a binary function imho.

And the meters might be placed in the center too. Most watched feature in a comp.

Some nice things though in this gui

Hrm, what's wrong with the combination (knobs/background) and with the numerals (except for the color)?

Due to the color, right? If you want a caption/field... well, as I mentioned that won't be possible for now...

It is a switch, so you only need to click it. No dragging necessary.

Hrm, dunno, I think it might be a little strange to place the brickwall setting knobs to the right of the meters. Besides, most plugins have the meters on the right.

That color chart is kind of quirky-I put in black and it came out black, black & black. I found this:
http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm
And it has ALL the different colors. When I in gray I got the same. but looking on the color chart, their gray is very dark gray. So it's tricky.

the numbers are too big, and dont stand out so well against that bkgd...the metal bkgd/metal knob combo is just something im not keen on, i prefer one or the other...
