Don't see this attribute as a defining factor...Confusing the hell out of people is not, in my mind, a hallmark of excellence
Is mere simplicity?
It's like blaming listeners for being intellectually lazy when they don't like non-mainstream work.
what nice little pigeonholes: 'mainstream' vs 'non-mainstream'.

I don't see anyone in here having asserted that confusion is a hallmark of excellence, or a defining factor in say an Ockeghem motet. That takes that post out of context, to make what point exactly?

Now, if all one understands in terms of rhythm is duple subdivisions of the time, and they are *confused* by anything with say a larger coefficient than that two, is the fault necessarily in the person acting as musician or as audience, all other factors being equal?

John Coltrane, Stravinsky, and Shostakovich spring to mind (not sure if Shostakovich is considered "modern," though), as well as Debussy (who, of course, is too early to really be counted, but always deserves a mention). I've been listening to some Messiaen lately, as well, and it's been fascinating.

hmm, good point, but reaching for more modern than hildegard von bingen, one can include pauline oliveros, delia derbyshire, wendy carlos (she does count), and nadia boulanger had her hands on the development of dozens of the best composers of the 20th century.

when it comes to songwriting, there's aretha franklin, joni mitchell, and carole king. and carla bley too.

None of these are anywhere near the great 20C composers. (nowhere near, indeed!)
They are film composers - so their music is bound by the demand of the visual image of the film, but their themes are weak compared to the likes of e.g John Williams, and e.g Sir William Walton ( the score for Henry V is great )
Also, Scott of the Antartic - Ralph Vaughan Williams

I'm sorry, the old stuff is much better ( and there wasn't all this mucking about with technology then...)
