It's a four-engine hybrid stepsequencer/arpeggiator that you can use as modulation sources, note sequencers or arpeggiators. Various different clocking and triggering options, swing, a lot of stuff lifted from the GURU step sequencers.

Four modes of operation for each engine:-
- Arpeggiator
- Note Sequencer
- Mod Sequencer
- Advanced (basically all at once plus some goodies)

up to 128 steps, 12 pattern memories per engine, poly arp mode.. it's a beast.
Is animator a separate product? or part of synth squad? THis is the first time I have heard mention of it!!

Post

and where do you find the videos?

thanks!

Its a part of Fusor, which is a part of Synth Squad.

And there is at least 1 introduction video here:

After a few seconds a "launch video" appears in the bottom :)

thanks for the info...

hmmm, that 'launch video' does nothing for me... just sits there...

It opens in a pop-up window, perhaps you're blocking it?

I think he means this one... it's a pretty deep walk-through of a lot of the features.

What's the relation between Synthsquad and Orca - is Orca just a stripped down Strobe?

The filter is Strobe is an OTA based cascade inspired by filters like the SH-101 and Prophet type filters. Orca has an SVF inspired by things like the Oberheim SEM and the Jupiter-6. Cypher has twin filters which you can switch between SVF (Orca) and MGF (ladder).

Having watched and listened, these synths may be the first in a very long time to actually get me into a music shop to try them out...i might do that at half term when i go to London (if they are out by then, if not maybe later)

But there's also something other digital synths lack, and it at least sounds like it's mostly thanks to how your overdrive is integrated with the basic sound.
"Digital Harness": Without wanting to start any kind of altercation, I would ask you to consider that the demos you've heard are medium bit-rate mp3's, and so will of course not sound as good as having the synths in the room with you.

"lack of flexibility": I think when you get the chance to try these synths for yourself you'll be pleasantly surprised. You are absolutely correct that truly fast, analogue sounding attacks are something that are normally lacking in software synths (as well as a few hardware analogue synths I could mention). Again, because the clips you have heard have been through an mp3 coder means that some of that immediacy has been lost due to a well known coding artefact known as pre-echo.

I hope that all makes sense! ;-)

This is one thing that I have always felt a problem with softsynths - but have to say not many talk about it here - prob for fear of starting an argument...But to me its plain to hear synths like the Virus and Blofeld has stonger attacks than most softsynths particularly in percussive sounds. However I did notice in the Arp presets Strobe has some real clout. I find that to be really important to me. And yes not all hardware have strong attack. I sold my Studio Electronics ATC1 because of this. And also the Matrix 1000....

If Andy or anyone would like to chime in - I'd love to hear any reasons as to why this is - as at one point I wondered whether is was just not possible to implement agressive attack qualities in native software instruments...I guess its just in the nature of the coding?
