i have the 901 and its battery is indeed excellent....i get 5-6 hours of music.
problem is the new soundcard (realtek HD) does not get on well with asio4all.
it works....but with a heavy cpu hit and crackles even at huge buffers.
using an external asio soundcard i can get low latency asio no prob...so its defenetly adio4all related.
maybe as it is new....it just needs a few drivers updates...not sure.

btw u can apply a touchscreen without soldering to the eeepc....they sell'e'm on ebay. (they go for 50-60$ on ebay).

i also use XT2 as its defenetly the easiest on the eye on small screens.

I should post an update to my review: warning! It seems to be impossible (at least currently) to record something directly into windows application under Ubuntu 8.04. It has been reported here already: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=216859 The possible cause of the problem is that Ubuntu 8 uses PulseAudio sound server (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio) instead of EsounD. PulseAudio is good (it can do very low latency), but there are still a few incompatibilities with Wine & Alsa.

Just thought I'd chuck up an update. I have the eeePC 900 20gig. I have a bunch of stuff on here for work (Visual Studio 2008 / SQL Server 2005). Everything runs sweetly!

For my music I'm running Orion Plat 7.5. Runs quite smoothly with no problems. Running the demo song which uses a bunch of Synths + Effects the CPU hovers at around 60%.

I've found that I'm easily able to create some pretty decent tracks without things coming to a crawl!

Only issue really is the vertical screen size, I cant seem to activate any scroll bars within Orion so the bottom of the drum editor sometimes cuts off. To overcome this I just up the resolution to 1024x768 and let the screen scroll!

I was wondering what you folks are using. If Linux, what are you using for sound (there seems to be a very small field of USB 2.0 devices that behave with linux)? If windows, what's a good, small and light firewall?

the demo song that opens the first time we install orion 7.5 DEMO ("nobody knows")? is this one? if yes i would be a bit dissapointed , i thought this eee's could be a little better (not much) than my oldp4 1.7ghz

, here this demo song runs at 32 % cpu (using asio4all)..
Anyone got reaper installed? won't mind to try play reaper demo song and see the cpu for me? would be thankfull .... here playing "bradsucks..something (demo song) makes cpu go 75-80% ..

It's about year now since I had my 701 for the first time...

Now I can share some experience with another small notebook - the Acer One.
It has 945GSE chipset and the Atom CPU clocked at 1.6GHz. I'm running it under Ubuntu8.04 with RT kernel. This machine feels quicker than old Asus 701, which was Celeron-M based (even if running at 900MHz). But to the point - EnergyXT2 running via Wine (native Linux version is slower in my experience, go figure!?) is fast enough to handle multiple Synth1 instance, some Ext2' effects at 11.6ms latency. Not bad at all especially considering you can freeze per track in EnergyXT2. Unfortunately Ext2' build in sampler/synth tends to be CPU heavy therefore not always usable.

Audio output quality is fine. It's not up to level of dedicated audio interfaces but it suffices.

With multithreading capable host you should be able to squeeze from Atom CPU a bit more. My guess is that with a multicore aware host and next generation of Atoms (presumably dual core ones and higher clocked) usability should approach that of current "normal" computers.

No didnt get one in the end.
After a heap of (internet based) research i'm still not convinced it will be powerful enough.
My plan is to find somewhere with a >7 day return policy so I can test it out with the actual apps I intend to use (Cubase AI, FL Studio, z3ta+, kontakt, amongst others)

im getting one!!! hopefully. this next weekend i am going to try to barter with my dad who just got one (and prob doesnt use it like i would) ... goodbye ibm thinkpad , hello eeepc. i will probably run T3, ext, and ableton live 7 on it, and decide which i want to keep- most likely live7.

ok update i am using it now and installing live 7 lite as we speak!!! this little thing is pretty damn cool, i dont care if i cant use a lot of vsti/vst - i think it is going to be awesome to play with my synths where ever and not really compose anything serious. just a learning and experimental tool when im not sitting at my studio... thats all i used my ibm laptop for, and this is just so much smaller, and i am thinking when i upgrade live to full, i would be able to do maybe some live improv shows with my keyboard maybe, i think it would be stable enough to do some crazy fx , drums, and synth pads.

ill let ya all know how it goes

just told my friend grymmjack on here that i ran a drum rack + 2 instances of simpler + reverb on a long decay and it was around 20% cpu, but that was running on the regular drivers that most likely have latency. havent hooked in my midi keyboard yet.

i just tried asio4all and it worked absolutely perfectly in live, unfortunately after a minute or two, it started crackling. will work on that.
