I would listen to a broad range of presets for a synth and if I would hear certain characteristics across the range of presets, I would consider that to be something rather intrinsic to the synth.
And you would be very wrong. The presets will tell more about the one(s) who made them than the synth. Unless of course the synth is very limited in its design - if it's 1 single saw oscillator with a lowpass, all presets will indeed sound the same & will show the synth's limits.
But Sytrus, FM7, Rhino & others offer you so many possibilities, different preset designers will reflect their style in their presets.

You might be right... However, if all the pro sound designers end up in a certain place, I do not feel confident to put time into this based on the idea that I am somehow going to take the synth some place rather different. So in practice, my assertion becomes so...

You present your opinion as fact here. And you're wrong, there is such a thing as a basic sound, owing to the nature of the engine that generates the sound.
