Hello to all,
i got a random problem when i work with the Arp in Zebra.
Sometimes it seems Zebra doesn't get a note off message and runs all the time.
Does anyone else got this problem too?
thanks,
Mark

I use Cubase 4.5.2 on Mac Osx. I got an Axiom 49 by M-Audio but it even happens, when i just draw a midi note.. Will see if i can reproduce it.
It happens quite randomly..thats the problem..
But i got one patch where it happens quite often.
thanks,
Mark

Hi,
I'm using Logic Studio on OS X 10.5.6, and I get stuck notes on a semi-regular but random basis. The only way to stop the note is to use the bypass button on the AU wrapper. I would make a complaint
but it is not specific to Zebra - most of other soft synths I use have this problem too.
Also, it's not specific to Logic ... the same thing occurs in VST Lord, which is a test host ... and I've noticed it happens in various hosts on Windows.
On either system, it seems more likely to occur when I am playing rapid test notes and doodling aimlessly, rather than actually playing while the transport is running.
Peace,
Andy.

I haven't noticed any stuck notes using the arp yet, but I have experienced the occassional stuck note whilst just playing randomly on the keyboard whilst tweaking a preset.
It very rarely happens so it doesn't bother me, when it does, sometimes just switching the preset clears it, or sometimes I have to switch the synth on and off again to stop it.
Even more bizarre, a couple of times whilst editing a preset using a lot of MSEG's, my mouse got stuck!. I had to reboot the computer to free it up again.
This could have just been coincidence or something, but it hasn't happened when not using Zebra (I checked the mouse on another machine and also tried a different mouse to see if it was the hardware).
Hmmm, maybe I should update my graphics drivers, haven't done that in a while, that's probably it...

I'm pretty sure it's mostly a problem with hosts and MIDI controllers. For instance, I sometimes get MIDI events twice when my Xboard is hooked up over MIDI and over USB. Then, some hosts tend to give me a double Note-On but skip the second Note-Off. Two Note-Ons plus a single Note-Off makes a hanging note.
There have also been issues with cheap controllers in the past. I forgot what exactly it was, but folks found out that they didn't conform to the MIDI standard. Maybe I come across this again and then I can post it...
Btw. as Zebra has no Panic button, the easiest way to reset the voice architecture is to change the number of voices or the playmode. So, if you have a hanging note just go from "polyphonic" to "retrigger" and back. There's no need to torture your keyboard with the elbow

Quack, does your problem occur with other soft-synths as well?. If so then it could be a midi controller issues as everyone else has suggested. But if not, then thats unlikely.
I must say I can't recall having a stuck note with any other soft-synths in a long time, my Roland XP80 + Midex8 midi interface has been pretty solid so far so I don't think its an interface issue in my case.
..and I just noticed you actually wrote it happens just when drawing notes sometimes in a previous post. Hmmm, something to look into then?

Arksun, many softsynths simply don't do the same note twice. Hence they would either restart the note when receiving a second Note-On, ignore the second Note-On completely or simply release both voices upon the Note-Off.
I believe that being able to play the same note twice (or even three times) is an expected behaviour. I'd consider anything else buggy. I also think that i.e. hosts which drop NoteOffs have to be considered buggy.
There was a hanging note bug back in 2004 or so. This was 100% reproducable and has been fixed since. As the current hangs are very random and can't be reproduced with a sequence, I think that they occurr, i.e. when someone plays live over a sequenced line, thereby unveiling a bug in the host, probably a threading issue between audio engine and MIDI thread. Or maybe a hardware error, like the wrongly spec'ed controlers we had...
Anyhow, I'll happily fix any bug in Zebra if someone can come up with a project file that makes a hanging note reproducable. I'll also log all MIDI activity in that case though to see whether the host acts to specs or not

Sorry for the nit-picking OT!

OT- I've been especially appreciating Zebra doing the same note twice lately... maybe in conjunction with the mod mapper and randomization of parameters.Urs wrote:Arksun, many softsynths simply don't do the same note twice.
