Is it possible to record with an usb microphone?
That is the question for me...
I really like mulab and i am having troubles to part from it on vacation.
My wife has a decent laptop that i can use but i really dont want to move my mixer with the mic preamp.
So i want to buy and use a usb microphone.

Is it possible?

Regards
Robert

Yes and yes!

Before expanding my setup I had some great times recording with the cheap and excellent Samson C01U - just need to configure it as an ASIO device with ASIO4All.

I've had a bit of a play with the Rode Podcaster as well, and was able to use that like a full duplex device because of the built-in monitoring - multitracking in Audacity was a breeze! Couldn't justify the price for what it does compared to what I do, but YMMV.

USB mics certainly have their place, and bang-for-your-buck I just can't recommend the C01U enough.

Thank you for that positive answer.
The C01U is actually one of the two microphones i am interested in.

Just one more question then, just to follow up...
If i would like to use it to my desktop computer, in witch I have an Esi Juli@ soundboard, with its own asio drivers.
Can i use two different asio drivers? One for the mic and one for juli@?

This might be an idiot question but i am fairly new to this computer studio stuff.
I used to have a lot of old synths, drummachines and stuff in 1987, but i sold everything to buy a expensive, too advanced for me, sampler/synth/seq and the inspiration died.(so i sold that one and spended all the money on wine)
So now im back and i have decided that Mulab is very good for me.

Quote of the day; brought an enormous grin to my face. The motto is - if you don't like your gear, sell it and buy loads of wine! Love it. Cheers mate. Just what I needed after a crap day at work :D

Some hosts will only talk to one ASIO device at a time (I use FL, and it's that way for me) in which case you'll need to configure both your mic and your Juli@ in ASIO4All so your host sees one device (ASIO4All).

thankyou.

Do you know a host that allows more than 1 ASIO driver at the same time?

As far as i know, ASIO itself only allows 1 driver at a time in the host.

Anyway, good to hear ASIO4ALL can workaround this.

AFAIK, the only way to have multiple ASIO drivers is to have them accessed from separate processes. Whether you can then "wrap" those processes some way and still achieve real-time, synchronised response, I leave as an exercise for someone else ;). (ASIO4ALL is wrapping the WDM drivers.)

(Reaper "appears" to support two ASIO interfaces -- it has a ReaRoute ASIO driver that can be accessed from other hosts (as if it were an ASIO driver) at the same time as it access the soundcard's ASIO driver. So I guess you could have one copy of Reaper accessing one ASIO driver, then to ReaRoute, to another copy of Reaper on a different ASIO driver...)

Thank you for this answer.
I think the solution is a littlebit to complicated to be a real solution for me.

I also think that this forum is fantastic.
Quick responses with very good and serious answers.

Keep up the good work Mulab and all you enthusiasts!
