The point of Uniwire

Just briefly, we use a Receptor Pro with Komplete mainly as a live instrument which it is reasonable for. Occasionally I bring it home to continue working out the many issues I have with it, usually getting Garritan Orchestra to install being at the top of the list.
Having read a few posts about people's uses for Uniwire it would appear that it is only really applicable in a post midi situation whereby you would instantiate a basic vst from your host to play in a part and then replace it with, say, an Akoustik Piano via Uniwire. If you choose to play an Akoustik Piano from Receptor over Uniwire then you need to set your sample rate so high that latency not just detectable but you can smoke a cigarette between depressing the key and hearing a sound. Anything under a thousand plus samples and though the CPU meter on Remote doesn't register the obvious death it's experiencing the dropouts and strangled cat sounds tell the story. Also I still see a considerable cpu strain on the Mac meter, which seems anti the stated purpose of the Receptor in this mode. Am I correct in thinking, as I said earlier, Uniwire should only be used as a 'post' instrument? I'll add that I also had high hopes of running instances of something like a Vintage Warmer over several tracks, using the Receptor as an outboard compressor, but it would seem the plugs can only be run over Receptor instruments.
BTW I know I can just run it in as an audio instrument but I like to edit midi and swap out instruments.
I run Logic 8 on a dual 1.8 G5, 3gig ram with a Metric Halo 2882.
Thanks, Glenn

...hmmm, i was hoping to be able to use the Receptor as 'outboard-extension' to my DAW (Ableton Live) for VSTs...bloodychoir wrote:Am I correct in thinking, as I said earlier, Uniwire should only be used as a 'post' instrument?

...i found out, that this is not possible, as UniWire puts a massive load onto the Receptor on one hand, and onto the network on the other hand...
...i experienced crackling and audio-dropouts even with a latency-setting of over 90ms(!) - that means no way to play intuitively and in realtime...
...so, what i do now is i route the MIDI into Live, record and treat it there and rout it out to the Receptor - which is much quicker than sending it via UniWire and the network (low traffic Gigabit-network here); as for the audio i take the ADAT-out and route it back into Live again (MIDI-out and audio-in is handled by a MOTU 828 MKII at the moment)...for audio i want to be treated by the Receptors plugins i do it similarly: audio-out into the Receptor, and routing it back - all besides UniWire and the network...
...lesson i learned: UniWire is a nice conception, but it doesnt work (for me) in real live; running 8+ softsynths on the Receptor (Pro Jr.) is no problem when avoiding Uniwire (CPU load about 30%), and simply impossible with UniWire running (CPU load 100% - audio noise and dropouts)...
...i can adjust to that - i just dont think that i'll be uprading to a Receptor 2 soon (would have the option as i bought my Receptor in november only), as i dont see - and have not received a confirmation from Muse - that UniWire will be able to handle the audio better than using the non-network solution...i now just wish that there would be ADAT in supported also...

When I first got mine in 10/30/08, I set it up for unimire. It wouldn't work at all with Tracktion or Orion. I could get it to work with SAW and I could get EnergyXT to host it. I found that OPXa and Piano Tec ran way better on my PC than the Receptorized version in receptor. I was constantly adjusting my (Aurora 8 running in to the) AES16 PCIe buffers and sample rate along with makeing it work with the receptors settings to try and get a clean sound. I finaly gave up and used the audio and midi ports on the back and then It started to work as advertised. I can get And ADAT add on cart if I want the 8 channels or 8 extra if I add a SPDIF input
Before I purchased Mine I called Muse and Asked if a newer model would be coming out. The Ass on the other end told me not any time soon. So I bought the rev C pro. Now I am upgrading to Max 2 for about $500 more than if I had waited for the new model.

A minor scale is a major scale starting 3 half steps down from the major and visa versa. Any Chord has as many versions as it has notes.

...sorry, i dont get it? - you are using ADAT-out (8 channels) and S/PDIF-in (2 channels)?...that is how i do it, but perhaps i overlook something and there are more inputs/outputs than i can see, that is why i am asking again...Throbert wrote:I can get And ADAT add on cart if I want the 8 channels or 8 extra if I add a SPDIF input
...why do you upgrade? - i am now 99% sure that i do not want to upgrade as the performance-increase due to the CPU and the additional RAM is not enough to make UniWire work at least as good as the 'conventional' way (see above) is working...Throbert wrote:Now I am upgrading to Max 2 for about $500 more than if I had waited for the new model.
...additionally i have received an answer to my ticket asking what UniWire-performance on the R2 will be, that they have not tested the difference in performance between the old and the new model(?!!), but they can now have 10-12 concurrent UniWire-session on the R2 with...just a second, let me quote
...i dont understand what 'great reliability' means; i asked, if there will be audio-dropouts, noise or crackling...no answer to that, at least, i - again - dont get it...MuseResearch Support wrote:What you will notice with the increased network speeds/ bandwith is that
You can have a lot more Uniwire channels going. I have run sessions with
as many as 10-12 Uniwire tracks while Uniwire is set to a buffer size of
512 and seen great reliability (although this was in Logic, not Ableton)
...plus...with the 'conventional' way i now af a latency-setting of 128...beats 512...

Well I know you have to use the SPCIF for sync if you are going to use uniwire with the outputs. I thought the same if you ran ADAT with the outputs. Maybe not... After the Upgrade I'll try uniwire again but I'm not getting my hopes up.
I get a Discount on the upgrade since I purchased after 9/1/08 but I still think it's overpriced especially when I consider that I was basically lied to. I figure now rather than later and have to psy even more after 3/31/09. It will be nice to have a little more power under the hood.
