Performance Question - considering to buy ....

Hi,

My wife (the musician), for live play, has Komplete and Kore. However, Kore is a real headache as soon as she want to use Akoustic Piano and other plugins (B4, Pro53, FM7). Even just loaded in Kore they seem to chew up the CPU and all she wants is to be able to do is transition from a piano to an EP or pad smoothly, possibly layering a few. I've tried all of the performance tweaks to no avail.

So we are looking at the various Receptor models. I've viewed some of the Tutorials - looks impressive. I'd love to hear from some others who are using Receptor for live play with multiple plugins and what performance issues you may have or don't have and are very happy.

We do not want to sink $ into something that doesn't meet her needs.

I did a search on performance and will read more, but I hope a few of you can answer this directly.

Thanks,

Bob :)

Pianoteq is a lot more practical to use on a Receptor because of this exact issue...I realy don't see the attraction of sampled pianos after using Pianoteq (or even TruePianos for that matter). It takes very little memory, cpu power, etc. and loads fast. You could compromise and simply use a piano model for layering, and if she is totally infatuated with Akoustic Piano, use that for solo purposes only.

The latest version of Pianoteq (v3) has a new EP model that is one of the best I have heard, and it is simply a preset so it switches fast. It is an "expansion" (but included as a demo), and v3 is not compatible with Receptor yet (I run v2 just fine). It also takes a bit more cpu because of the new mic placement modeling (and reverb). You can of course turn these features off, but why?

Looks interesting - but of course we already own Akoustic Piano and Pianoteq looks like it is in some ways similar to Ak. Piano. My question is: using Receptor, will she be able to play Ak. Piano and have other channels loaded with other plug-ins ready to be used as she switches to them (however that is accomplished in Receptor) without having CPU issues/drop outs, too much latency etc. She can't do this in Kore (at least I can't get it to work). I guess this is mainly a performance issue - how much more efficient is receptor then a Mac?

Bob,
I can say with complete confidence that you and your wife would get the performance you are looking for out of a Pro JR or better. I have not used anything older or slower than a Pro Jr so I can not speak for them. I gave up on running Mainstage on my MacBook Pro (Amazing in theory, totally unreliable.... urg!!). On the Receptor I always have a channel of Akoustic, Electrik, and 1-2 channels of Atmosphere for pads up and running in some combination. I have had no performance issues with this at all. None. Often I'll also have a couple of others like Zebra, or VSM, etc. dialed up too. I usually run Akoustic or Electrik layered with Atmosphere or Zebra (Pad) and the pad is controlled by an expression pedal. That way the piano sound is always there dynamically and I can gas pedal in the pad as needed. I MIDI filter the pianos (In the Receptor software) to not play for the velocity of 1-5 of 128 so the lightest touch gets you pad only. I can describe my experience best as really "connected" to the sound.

I do recommend (and you will figure this out) to not switch presets within Acoustik or Electrik because of the long load times. Instead, call up your favorite patches on seperate channels and switch between them using snapshots. Works beautifully.

Good luck!
