Hey, I just checked out a lot of the songs from the competition and wanted to know more about how the were created.
How does the whole raw pcm thing work? I know what pulse code modulation is but how do you turn it into music? What is different when you open a plug in as raw pcm code instead of normally?
Thanks,
Andrew

Hey Jupiter8, I'm asking how the songs from the Smart Electronix competition were made. Here is a link and a quote from the rules.http://www.smartelectronix.com/competit ... ed=compRes (http://www.smartelectronix.com/competitionResults.php?selected=compRes)
From the rules:
"The only audio source materials that you are allowed to use in your songs are the data of the Smartelectronix plugins themselves, opened in your favorite audio editor as RAW PCM data. Of course you can also use the synthesizers from various members. You can use the synths either as sound generators (for example GalactiX, OnePingOnly, DmiFlute, ..) or of course imported as RAW PCM."
--I'm asking what they're talking about with this. The only thing I can figure out about using raw pcm data to create audio is that obviously Squarepusher does it a whole lot.
thanks,
Andrew

did this some years back for a comp..
i think you just raname the .dll to .raw and load it into you audio editor, edit to taste and load into sample player of choice in host of choice...but it was a long time ago, so i may be way off the mark

Ah ok i see. I have'nt heard about that competition. Audacity can open any file as RAW. But it'll sound pretty much like noise since the PCM data will be pretty much random.ande1718 wrote:Hey Jupiter8, I'm asking how the songs from the Smart Electronix competition were made. It's actually noise-like but you can easily find pitched patterns in there either because of repeating code patterns but more likely because of embeded image resources.jupiter8 wrote:Ah ok i see. Playing with the raw import bit-depth, sr and PCM format gives interresting results.
We had a great time listening to all the submited entries!

Hey Mdsp, so does Kriminal have it right that it has to do with changing the file extension to .raw? (He says change the .dll file to .raw but I'm not familiar with .dll files)
Honestly I'm still pretty confused about how to set this up.
I use Kontakt a lot can someone walk me through the set up process for that program or something similar? Maybe Battery?
Thanks,
Andrew

that was a 100% hackers and geek contest to see how far such constraints could push people's creativity.
there's also an info page for each entry describing how the song was built:
