Noob question about FM synthesis

Well, the zero Hz carrier trick is a type of waveshaping. Zebra offers its own, separate Shaper modules; they're geared toward effects other than the FM type of shaping, but they can still be handy.

There isn't such a direct equivalent to applying both feedback and a modulator to the same carrier in Zebra, but your modulators can be much more complicated compared to a "pure FM" synth -- in Zebra your modulators can be the Oscillator modules, complete with Osc FX, PWM, Sync, the list goes on.

Unless there's a particular type of sound that you know you want, but can't get with Zebra, I'd suggest sticking with it for now. No synth, not even Zebra, can do EVERYTHING, but Zebra can do enough to keep you busy/happy...

Careful, Urs will probably take that as a challenge... :hihi:

Seriously, Zebra is deep enough to keep me going for a looong time yet, which is why I invested in it. As you say, I'll wait to see if I need those specific sounds before buying FM8 or Octopus.

Thanks very much for your advice. :tu:

One funky trick in zebra is stereo FM. Put an FMO in stereo mode, width = 100.00 somewhere behind a normal oscillator. On the normal oscillator, modulate Pan with an LFO or an envelope. Panning basically means having different FM-amounts on each side. This can lead to crazy sounds other than just detuning.

Jeez, so much to learn! There should be university degrees in Zebra...

Thanks, Urs. I should add that I also bought Zebra because of U-He's reputation for incredible customer service. And you've certainly been delivering in that department!
