Seems like the modulation of the fm amount has a different behaviour in the modulation matrix then whan use directly from the fm module modulation tab (phioew)
Test this ...choose one osc ( simple sine wave )
Add an fm osc ....now modulate the fm amount of the fm oscillator with a square wave lfo ....it's better if you use the user hape and draw it yourself modulate it directly from the fm osc .
You'll notice that the negative values of the square wave also affect the fm amount ....
Now when you do this from the modulation matrix ( destination fm amount ), same lfo source , the behaviour is totally different ...negative square wave values do not affect the fm amount ...Also a saw wave has different results when used in both ways described ...

cheers ....after years hanging around here I finally registered on this forum

Yes. The direct modulation of FM-amount is oblivious to negative values of bipolar modulation sources. This saves cpu and might open up some options.

The ModMatrix on the other hand operates only within the range of the target parameter. This is naturally crucial as the otherwise result might be some unpredictable behaviour, if set e.g. to filter parameters. It wouldn't do harm to exceed the ranges of the FM amount parameter, but the ModMatrix doesn't know anything about that, hence it stays on the safe side.
