Every day I'm here I see a truck load of people clamoring to figure out how to sound like this that or the other band. So what I want to know is are you a leader trying to find your own sound by experimentation, trial and error, imagination and good old creativity or are you a follower who cant stand the fact you suck and the only thing you can figure is that to be good is to sound exactly like your idols or who ever is the flava of the month.

I know that at times my tracks can have an essence of something that's been done before. And many of you have that element as well. But there is an extreme difference between sounding like another artist/band when you are attempting to be unique and creative. When attempting to create a certain style/genre of music its understood that your influences will show at times in your music as well. But there are multitudes of bands in the same genre that don't sound the same as well.

But I'm talking of complete emulation here. Because I'm getting sick of the "How to sound like "X" Threads!

If you're sick of "How do I sound like..." threads the best thing to do is not to read them. Problem solved. Easy, yes?

Don't know if I'm a leader, but I'm certainly not a follower. I couldn't be part of a genre if I tried (which I don't). :hihi:

True! and everyone has there option to emulate or be emulated. I just find it kinda sad that I see more threads from people dying to be the the next big thing while trying to sound like the current big thing........

I guess its always been that way has it not? Its just now we have the ears or should I say eyes of those in the know to give us the low down on how to get this or that sound.

I guess I've always been on the curb when it comes to the flava of the month style. In high school I would wait until a fasion trend was over and then pick up that obsolete trend just to make people confused. Shorts in the winter, coats and pants in da summer kinda thing.

@serve: It's going to happen no matter what, tiresome though it may be (and it is, no argument there). People starting out often get into music because they want to make more songs like their favorite artists. I'd rather that more of them would try to emulate different artists, not so many fixating on the same ones, but mass media being what they are we're going to get a lot of people who all like this month's phenomenon.

Here's the thing: KVR is big. I mean, you think it's a long way to the chemist's but I mean REALLY big. It's got old-timers who know every trick and have seen it all. It's got clueless newcomers who desperately want to get in the door, some honestly trying to learn and others who bring an attitude that's sure to defeat them. And it's got a few clueless old-timers like me.

The point is that there are going to be all kinds of questions from all kinds of querents. A little like an old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse, with children of all ages mixed together, only broken up not by age but by subject area. And bigger. Really bigger. The only way to navigate this is by browsing threads' subject lines, picking and choosing which are worth reading and joining.

Same old same old? Ignore. New, interesting? Click.

The alternative is to petition Ben to add a new link to each thread: "Click here to not read this thread."

Yeah, Yeah I know.......But I really couldn't help but post this. I guess its just a sad fact that many would be talented artists burn out trying to sound like who ever while they never even new that right around the corner was there own style bending genere waiting to be split into sound waves.

PS. Any one know how to get that Stevie Wonder head wiggle style down. Just can't seem to manage it without Serous neck pain in the morning.....

I pity anybody who wants to sound like me. I'm told they have a cure for that these days. :)

I'm not really a leader or follower (and I don't like toast much.) I'm the one who wanders away from the group after a few minutes.

The skills they learn trying to copy can become the foundation for later learning to branch out on their own. Same goes for visual and performing artists too. A few are brilliant enough to dive straight in without first imitating. A few just won't make it, for whatever reason. The majority seem IME to do best taking things a step at a time.

Now, if after years they're still doing nothing but copying, especially without learning for themselves HOW to copy, they aren't growing either as artists or as musical technicians. But once they've moved beyond simple imitation, there's no harm in enjoying a bit of audio mimesis as well.

Actually, I first said "So, is that how Last Resort came up with their songs?" but I edited it when I realized even less people would know who I was talking about. :hihi:
