Want me do another round? I can probably come up with totally different set of opinions this time? :)

OK,
for me B sounds best. Keeps the most punch

Then A

C sounds to overcompressed.

I think The Glue is B

Post

I'll the Duende to the list.. (PM sent)

I still have not heard or used either the Glue, or the UAD SSL, but I'll venture to guess that B must be the UAD. It has the "UAD signature" attack. Don't know what it is but UAD compressors seem to have a certain sound.

so

A) glue
B) UAD SSL
C) the tweaked hardware

Post

Don't know which is which because I haven't heard 2 of the compressors in question

Cute beat I prefer B as I think it controls the image in a pleasent yet still lively way C is close second. I like A the least as it sounds quite flat and unexciting.

DaGroove Same as the above

Testtrack I prefer C with A as a close second. I like B the least as I find it quite stale sounding.

Post

Side: I was using Mac Book Pro Laptop Speakers. I'm sure this changes a lot of things. I'm sure it changes drastically with Head Phones or Speakers. I prefer any speakers over head phones for listening anyway.

Cute_Beat

A: Loved
B: Hate
C: Hate

B & C had too much going on (laptop speakers). One of them sounded "crushed." A was real smooth.

DaGroove

A: Felt it working
B: Loved
C: Same as A

These were all very close, but B seemed to be doing a good job of sounding like it wasn't really doing anything. The uncompressed version sounds like it has the most compression !!!!!

TestTrack

A: Loved
B: Hate
C: Similar to A with a slightly different attack / release

A was Really good. Again in line with the whole "I'm working but you can't tell thing." B was very bad, C was very similar to A, it let more transients through and had a slight (very slight) odd breathing to it compared to A.

Now when are the results of the blind coming. As I need to figure out where my money should be spent.

BTW, I already have the Waves SSL stuff, (HATE the channel strip). Wonder if UA's channel strip is closer to the real deal. Waves did a good job in capturing the IDEA of the strip, but NO WAY is a 4000 That Tiny sounding. ESP the comps. If it's on par with the 88RS, which I'm sure it is, the Strip should be great.

Where are the Channel Strip shoot outs?

Hey BManic,

What Nebula 3 comp is that, and do you have the settings for
17.10.2007 - plugin: Nebula3
Original "Dre Like" loop

Who said Nebula can't pump!?
Parallel compression, strengthens the middle riff nicely!
Subtle "mastering" balance, listen to how "controlled" the dynamics are!
Not so subtle mastering, punch!
Middle riff extracted!
Drum extraction!
Who said Nebula can't pump!?

I really like what it's doing there, and I could use that. I wonder if I have the compressor already, since I have pretty much all the beta stuff, maybe not your compressor though, but I have a lot of compressors. If you could just give me the preset name (exact name) I may have it. Thanks a lot, what's in store for Core II now that you can sample a comp!

I heard it'll take forever in a day to do though.

its still much less time than actually programming it. plus it will sound ten times more. :)

I think I used one of the Yakuza compressors (yamaha 2020) for that example. Probably the numeric version (one that doesn't color the sound). It might also be my sample from the dbx 376 tube channel, the numeric version. I've probably played around with the settings on the envelope page to get those results.

Cheers!

Bmanic, will the results be posted today?

Post

You probably did the Timed Hack in Nebula.xml / where you set it to something like 1ms or the one giancarlo told me about where you put in a new field that went even lower than 1ms.

About the envelopes, I presume that's the EVS or EVF settings in the MAST page / err . . . make that the EDIT page, then ENV page. I think.

I have the Yakuza, don't think your dbx 376 is in that pack though!

Not sure, if I can nail that result I'll be using that compressor with those settings for a while.

Any help past what I've said????

Yes sorry, I forgot. Here are the answers:

A = The Glue

B = The Hardware

C = UA 4k Buss Compressor

What I found very interesting is that the majority preferred the hardware. Also of note is that Kingston thought the UA version was his own hardware. I can't blame him, I'd most likely had chosen 'C' in all cases to be the hardware as it is so smooth. In fact, I actually preferred UA 4k on 2 out of 3 of these. Especially when it was completely nuked, it sounded the most stable.

The hardware does have the advantage of a very nice flexible side chain that gives it enormous range to work on nearly any material where you would want compression. Same with The Glue. Due to it's nice range knob and the external side chain and filter, it is actually a very capable compressor. However, I do feel like UA nailed the overall SSL sound better as it's smoother. Perhaps it's even a tad bit too smooth, as noticed by Vieris and some others in the other thread. Perhaps the Duende is the overall champion after all? Wouldn't that be nice if SSL themselves actually nailed the emulation the best? :)

Cheers!

I hate being right.

Now we just gotta convince Andy to model Kingston's improved SSL clone.
