jdt wrote:Well, from what I have gathered, the whole reason a developer offers a free plugin is to get you on the hook by offering you a quality VST so you will be more inclined to buy some of their higher end products. If they want to discourage commercial use, then they could easily incorporate the random noise/silence and time-out techniques that many do with their "give aways".
...
The whole reason can also be another one: It can be a step against the
"commercialize everything and every ace". The current financial crisis
shows us the bad side of the "striving for profit at any cost". For
every ace of museum of tourist sight you have to pay pay pay - money is
the world! Money makes manager and even ordinary people eager, so that
they would do nearly everything. We've seen this scenario at big
companies. And we see this in our every day life.

Couldn't there be another concept?

Perhaps a modern world where not everything is measured by the money? A
world where unsalaried und honorary persons working for society are
cherished much more. A world where a person is not appreciated only by
the size of his/her wallet?

A dialogue in Spaceship enterprise comes into my mind: A visitor form
the 20th century is amazed and asks: "This must have cost a lot of
money, doesn't it?" Captain Picard answered: "We don't have any money.
Money was abolished in the 23rd century already."

Even today we know the "Open source group" with their special
"non-commercial" spirit. We know the Unix-world and we know this
kvr-freeware world. We know groups who discuss the meaning of money in
an abstract way: Does it improve the humanity in our world? Or is it a
means of power and supression? Of course, this is a complex, large
discussion, never ending perhaps. And I think the idea of protecting an
area where money has no meaning is very charming.

Considering these ideas the "freeware offer" here becomes a totally
altered aspect, a philosophical aspect of another society and future
... so maybe this is it, what Daniel wants to implicate here?
He creates his marvellous plugins for us. And we artists use it - all
for free - without money involved. And Daniel just wants that also in
all results of our creativity money is not involved. A honourable idea.

Greetings, enroe.
At this point, all I can write is: +1.
Nicely said.
Well it's all fine and dandy in an utopia. The funny thing is, people preaching this stuff are usually the most corrupt and never go by their own philosophies (just look at the whole self-help market or those "spiritual truth" books and shit like that.. it's disgusting). Personally I'm much more a believer in a capitalist system that rewards people, gives benefits to people who work and shuns the ones who do not work. This is NOT equal to corruption and missuse of the system. Confusing the two is silly. Money is not evil, it's people who miss-use money and the monetary system that are evil. Power is what corrupts, money is a way to get power hence the common confusion.

I'm all for giving people stuff for free and gladly give advice, beta test, do whatever, all for free. However, once a person demands that you do something for free, they themselves need to prove that they can live by their own standards. This is where it usually falls apart. Hypocrisy is the most common disease in the world. It's so easy to blame systems, behaviors, movies, magic, a God, a group of people for anything, and then completely forget about oneself.

Until everybody, and I mean really E V E R Y B O D Y, every single individual on this planet, goes through their common chores in their daily life (be it what it may, a homeless guy picking through his trash, a millionaire flying in his private jet) and can act as a compassionate human being, doing the right thing, all the time, from every moment on, we will not have an utopia for society. It will simply not happen until people take complete responsibility, at every level, for themselves and their own actions in every situation.

For example: A homeless guy that blames some millionaire from not giving any money to society doesn't, in my opinion have this right, until he does the same. Once he gives some himself, how little or much it is doesn't matter one bit, only that it is proportional in that it really is a donation and not an excuse, that's when he gets the right to criticize.

.. throwing the first stone and all that fluff ..

Cheers!

PPS. .. no, I am not able to live by the above ideology, I am just a man after all. I wish I could but it'll take a few more reincarnations to get there.. :hihi:

Pity Daniel doesn't chime in here, it's about his creations and his EULA after all and there is a lot of good will here to respect his intentions.
Not being a native speaker I might be totally off here, but the way I interpret his words is "it's ok as long as it's for your own musical projects, commercial or not", that way his anti example of the mastering business (doing paid work for others) would make sense.
And obviously he would hate to see others make money off his creations by selling freeware or "borrowing" his code, guess what, I would feel the same in his place.

Actually it's a little worse than that - you're an audio engineer! :hihi:

DAMN! bmanic, susiwong and kylen... it's like you're inside my head! No worries though I guess, there's lots of room in there. :hihi:

The easiest way for a provider to avoid all of this mental masturbation by his/her/its user base is to use this EULA:

WTFPL license

Very easy to interpret.

Err...I think you lot need to have a look at the 'Welcome to the archive'
text again. Its been changed and a subtly different one put in it's place.
Or rather updated, I should say.
So Daniel has chimed in over there, but not sure anyone has noticed, in
all the fuss.

Brace yourselves ;-)

The old link has gone. This is the new one:

Don't know if it makes things any clearer re: pro use etc......

Guess you'll just have to work that one out for yourselves...

Fwiw Daniel, I really appreciate your plugs and respect you greatly
as a person.
I also respect the people trying to 'do the right thing', even if it
has all ended up with a twist of lemon to it...

Cheers.

I don't share all of your thoughts, but surely some it seems, but concerning freeware this is a great post! (The example with the poor man seems to me only half true - yes it is true, but nobody should forget how the man got poor and others rich. I am astonished to see how many people in our western world really "believe" in capitalism, even now, and sometimes it is not much different to obscure other beliefs... If your example-man would be someone suffering from the fact ALL western countries have millions of unemployed or extremely bad paid people (you work, but you cannot live from your work I mean, there are millions like that...) - he could of course be in a extremely bad position, and could of course ask - not for freeware for his music :hihi: - but for money from the super-rich woman or man...(which leads to the basic income for all, which in 30 years will be a reality - paid by a consume tax from ALL, so all do something for it, and all benefit from the fact that automisation is a good thing, but takes the work away for millions.)

Aaah, from automisation of work to automation of plugins, and back to topic :hihi:

err, thanks for the post anyway, bmanic, and back to topic...

Post

...and anyway, back from no-internet I learnt through this that there is another superb plugin from this wonderful developer :D.

So wouldn't that line of reasoning work for any socio-economic system? Like, "it's not communism, it's human lack-of-consciousness-about-responsibility"? Sorry: don't buy it (no pun intended). :D

Ha,ha. I find it strange that I was quoted twice in the "people who don't get it" section when I was the one who got it from the very beginning. Exactly like I said. Free to use in your compositions. Not free to re-distribute or re-sell. Hope it clarifies for anyone that didn't understand it to begin with I guess. Personally, just for the record, I did.

OK.

I run a small studio. I put food on the table and pay my bills this way.

I charge an hourly rate for my work.

I don't know for sure, but I am ASSUMING the license means:

I CANNOT use these plugins in the course of my work.

Is that right?

thanks,
cAPS

For sure you can according to the licence itself. The clarification is so badly worded that i think it's totaly meaningless. I would have no idea, having read what Daniel wrote, what his possition on what you want to do is.
