Wow. It's shocking how quickly a Cubase thread can turn into a Mac vs PC thread these days... :?

I'm all for free speech and all, but maybe it's time to officially ban mac vs pc debates

That an irrational impression given that the least expensive Mac mini is $599.00. But even so, having that impression yourself is not anything that you would have been obliged to pass on to your students. You simply could have informed them of the available choices that you're aware of -- minus your fears and biases.
Regardless to use Logic requires an investment in a new computer (whatever the price) it also means learning a new O/S and that is like the OP says not conducive to being readily accessible to all... if they already have a decent spec pc for instance why by a new machine to run one piece of software!

headquest, I totally agree with you regarding your thoughts on Live, it is an awesome app indeed, but the limitations often are hard to ignore. I'm still on Cubase 4 and to be honest, I love it!. It is an amazing application and is rock solid 99% of the time.

I have always thought of Live as my 2nd choice on PC though, nothing else with so many features (i.e. Sonar, Samplitude) fits my way of working. Logic on the mac is also brilliant, but as you mention, it's not a viable option for students (or even working people) to spend $3,000 on a half decent computer. Though, in my opinion Cubase, Logic and Live are very professionally designed pieces of software, where in most cases, there is a lot of thought behind the process of achieving certain tasks. Compare this to something like REAPER (no offense to anyone), and you see the menu structure is getting out of control, it feels very poorly designed .. mainly because so many features keep getting added without proper long-term planning for how the app will end up. Comparing to Cubase, most people will agree that Cubase can do a lot more than REAPER (MIDI, elastic audio, audio editing, surround sound, score editing .etc), yet the menus are so so neat, as is the GUI.

I plan to try Live 8 soon myself, I keep a list of feature omissions in Live that affect me, and I update them with each version update.

Here's my current list (some of these items may remind you why Live annoys you occasionally):
Features that I love in Live 8:
- Keyboard MIDI control
- Best freeze implementation
- Best ReWire implementation
- Best sidechain compression sound
- Session view
- Racks
- Customizable colours
- Very stable, supports dblue Glitch & works well with Voxengo
- Great for DJing: Re-pitch, cue, crossfader
- Flatten tracks
- Built-in sampler & excellent drum machine

These are fixed in Live 8:
- VST 128 parameter limit
- No easy Fades / Crossfades
- Folder Tracks
- Non-global swing
- No channel grouping (that is, linking faders)
- No Groove quantize
- No top quality time stretching

Not available yet (affect me):
- No MIDI track volume and pan
- No MIDI cc automation lanes on tracks
- Vertical Audio Zoom (amplify waveform visually)
- Multiple Vocal Takes and Comping
- Transport Space / Shift+Space behavior, I wish it could be switched
- No Score editor
- ASIO Direct Monitoring
- Can't trim clips to very short lengths (must use delete command as workaround)
- No overlap on same note in piano roll
- User Definable Key Commands
- No accurate editing (value entering) of automation point values
- Dragging a clip/track won't scroll up down the arrange window when moving to tracks that are not visible
- No track hiding in Mixer
- No built in wave editing
- Advanced Project / File management
- Tools (selection, sciscorrs)
- No easy realtime export (for use with Virus TI)
- Incomplete ghost clips implementation

Not available (don't affect me):
- Surround sound mixing
- Automation in session clips
- Dual monitor support
- Namable audio ins / outs
- OMF Support
Best of luck with Cubase 5 mate, and keep Reason 4 around, Electromechanical and Thor make it worth holding on to :D

WTF happened to my Cubase thread while I was sleeping?

Seriously - no more Mac/PC stuff please. That's been done enough.

Thanks to all who wished me well with Cubase. I will report back with my first impressions of it sometime today (due to busyness only had about 4-5 hours with it so far) :)

@ susiwong: many thanks for your great help in this and other threads, and for all those links. :tu:

@ koolkeys: thanks for your good wishes man. Always happy to chat.

@ Mozzer: exactly.

@ Hink:

Cheers

Your list is really spot on. Just check the new crossfades in Live 8 though - manual only, so auto-crossfades belong on the list of things that are annoyingly missing. Otherwise a great update though.

Excellent post mate :tu:

Thanks bud :) Also, if you haven't done so, give HalionOne a good run, it is actually a hell of a rompler, I love it dearly now and use it a lot, even for some lead parts! Another favorite is the EnvelopeShaper plugin, once again, I adore this plugin and use it a lot on drums. :)

Have a great weekend mate.
Cheers

Cheers, and you have a good weekend too :D

I'm looking forward to exploring all the instruments, as I've not yet done that at all.

In fact I just remembered that so far I only even installed Disc 1...! So i just installed Disc 2, "VST Sound Collection", which probably has all the HalionOne content.

There are also Discs 3 and 4, which contain the demo of Halion Symphony Orchestra. As this is time limited I thought I would leave it a week or two while I have explore the main programme... but is HSO a good product anyone...?

Some help please...

I just had my first Cubase problem -

* I tried to open the programme and it threw up an error message. Something about DCOM and not connecting successfully to the dongle.
* It ignored further attempts to open Cubase until I did a reboot.
* Then I had same problem again.
* I tried to open the License Control Centre application which also froze.
* After second reboot I went to the licence control centre application first, which after a few moments opened and showed the license is okay.
* Next I opened Cubase, and it launched just fine.

Is this one of those things that can occasionally happen, and if so are there any tips for avoiding it? Or could my dongle have a potential fault, or for that matter the USB port I am using for it?

No panic, but if there are any good tips about this I would appreciate it. Cheers!

I've always found cubase buggy, and redundant. Great program, but it models a real world set up, in a virtual reality. It was great, and is still great, but is it a model for the future?

Live 8, seemed cool at first, but it is not much to write home about.

I like the new presonus.

Honestly...

A DAW can be such a time investment, to learn the ins and outs and all, for myself, I can't see me switching from live in the near future.

As for cubase...

I know how to use it, but prefer ableton's workflow. Even though, I'm one of the dudes who think ableton's a bit dirty sounding.

meh...

Mulab has a better audio engine.

I had the same problem, this fixed it for me, however my Windows is in Swedish so maybe i'm giving things their wrong names but you probably get it:

Right click on This computer, go to advanced tab, Power (?), Data Execution Prevention. Click add and the lower option of the two and add Synchrosoft protected object server.

That should fix it.

Thanks - I'll do that

Never had this issue myself, but I'm running XP64, which is like XP Pro, as Admin.
3 Syncrosofts (Steinberg, Arturia, Korg), zero issues.
I would plug the dongle straight into the PC, no hub, and possibly update to the newest LCC.

I seem to tread a similar path:

After using cracked Cubase 3.7 for some time I bought Traction (before Mackie), upgraded to T2, had problems using UAD-1, sold it, bought Cubase 3 SL (Edu version, because I began working at school), upgraded to 4 Studio and now to C5 (I didn't really need it, but hey...).

I tried using Sonar 5, 6, 7 ... and hated it, EnergyXT - romance lasted a week or so, Ableton 5 or 6 for a year or so then sold it, couldn't really work in arrange view (my fault probably).

I still haven't upgraded Reason Adapted but recently got Adobe v2 (s/h - to be upgraded to v3 sometime).

btw, has anyone checked the Halion Symphony Orchestra that comes with C5? I just don't have the time to really explore it.

cheers
