Cubase 5: Why I switched (headquest)

I think the problem was with the physical USB port most likely.

It's a rotten shame Steinberg still doesn't address these issues !

Also I wish that the Arrangement Window would stay maximised when you open up other panels.

I've found that rather than maximising the arrangement window, it's easier to just drag the edges of the arrangement window to fill the entire workspace.

Actually, I prefer to have the mixer always open (lowest profile), and positioned across the bottom of the workspace. I then drag the edges of the arrangement window to fill the remaining top portion of the workspace.

yeh will i have a bigger problem i switched from cubase to another i won't say and wish i'd never done so..i used cubase for 20yrs and thought i'd switch but.....now im stuck with a sequencer i cannot sell... i should of read the small print.duh

I switched from Cubase to Reaper because:
1. Cubase was buggy for me. (Reaper isn't)
2. The discussion forum really was crap. (While Reaper's is really good.)
3. They're part of some huge corporation just interested in short term profit. (While Reaper was just Justin Frankel (now two other people helping out.)
4. Reaper costs a lot less.
5. Reaper updates constantly unlike Cubase.

Ultimately, just the amount of time you people talk about this and that additional feature, the amount of time all the new features are saving you surely is less then the amount of time you spent talking about them here. At some point surely your time would be better spent just making music instead of buying the next version of a host, etc.

But as you like.

1. Reaper constantly crashed with various commercial plug-ins (Cubase doesn't)
2 The discussion forum really is carp - fanboys are us (while Cubase's is getting better for years and is now very informative )
3 They're part of some huge corporation, which mean their livlihoods depend on getting it right (Justin Frankel is a multi millionaire who could get bored and walk away to do something else -after all he's only done that twice so far)
4 Reaper would have cost me more money - I already own cubase
5 Who wants to spend all your life downlaoding bug fixes ? - and if you want to see no updates buy logic

As for having nothing else to do I am rendering a quadraphonic LP into surround - it will be done in about 3 hours - in the mean time I thought I could waste some time here. So, thanks for your informative and relavant opinion, do come again

C'mon man, don't mince words, tell us what you really think.

But seriously, as much as Reaper has improved, it can't even compete in areas such as MIDI editing, the new VST Expression functionality in Cubase, notation support etc., and it doesn't seem likely that it will. Not necessarily a bad thing for Reaper (it knows its market) as not all users are interested in such things.

Looks like I may hop on the Cubase gravy train again. It seems I'm eligable for Educational pricing, but there doesn't seem to be any info about whether an EDU version is valid as non-EDU when you upgrade to a new (non-EDU) version later?

Yeh but what happens when your no longer a student? I read on the Cubase forum that if you buy Cubase 5 at edu price that any future upgrades have to be paid full price like anyone else..

Yes but like they told me i'd have to pay the full upgrade price whatever it is at the time Cubase 6 comes out

It just means that you'll pay say £199 to upgrade to Cubase 6 then it will show you have the full licence after that..Cubase Studi0 edu is only £148.99 and Cubase 5 edu is £222.50

I seem to recall that the EDU is not upgradeable, but I could be wrong on this.

I'm curious about Jay Sherman's comment that Cubase is owned by a large corporation only interested in short term profits. IIRC, Cubase is the oldest continuously developed DAW. Clearly a brand and reputation that has been built over time, with innovation upon innovation over the years.

I just don't see where the 'short term' thing comes in. They offer a quality product at a premium price. Certainly not the earmarks of a short term cash grab.

While my personal opinion is that comparing Reaper to Cubase really is an apples v. oranges kind of thing, I think the premise that if one is great the other must stink is inherently flawed. You like it, use it. At the end of the day, it's the music that counts, isn't it?

Hi it's only upgradeable if you shell out the full upgrade price which could be a couple of hundred depending on what edu version you have
