I agree that when Cubase starts for the first time, it's confusing where to start, they probably should have a little wizard for first run I think.
Wouldn't be a bad idea at all. I remember the last time I moved house - didn't do any music for almost a year, and when I first loaded everything back up, I had to reset everything. I'd forgotten what a head-scratching thing it can be. Every time I set up Cubase I tell myself I must remember how to do it, and note it all down, and every time I forget.

There must be an easier way of setting it all up. I still think Cubase in actual use is one of the most intuitive (i.e. you need to read the manual rarely) but its set up is byzantine. Does the latest version still have that silly file that you have to move one level up to stop midi delays? Steinberg regularly put up stickies in the Cubase.net forum to inform people about it. Year after year they answer multiple questions about the midi delays, and yet all they had to do was modify the installer to place the file on the right folder. Simple, but they didn't fix it version after version. So the user had to find out about this one little file and move it themselves to the right place. Lots of hair-pulling all over the world with that one I should imagine, and yet they manage to produce a DAW that is smooth and easy to use for most users in day to day actual use.
Funny you mention it, but C5 STILL DOES have this problem with the file you have to move. I've had to do this with every version of Cubase since SX 2. I actually have the instructions taped to my studio wall so I don't forget. (I actually installed v. 5 and started getting a MIDI problem, and it took me awhile to figure out what the problem was. I really couldn't believe that this hadn't been addressed yet.)

Rock solid here. No crashes at all.

Actually, it's version 5.0.1. And yes, it's rock solid here too. Although I have a recurring problem with just 1 plug. Kitcore keeps crashing the system. Submersible has had similar reports from others and sent me a debug file. They're analyzing it now. Hopefully this will be addressed soon.

Hmm? Really need cubase with all features?
Think about!
Big names sell their products with big prices ;-)

For me nothing comes close to Renoise.
For me the best workflow and it cost not the hell. :oP

EDIT

Scratch that, audiomidi has it! I'll give them a call tomorrow maybe!

Yup, same here. The nice thing about upgrading from SX3 is it's the same upgrade price as going from Cubase 4.

For the record, we also teach Cubase in our school. Students can get Studio 5 for $169 and it'll work on either their PC or their Mac, meaning they don't have to buy a redundant machine just to be compatible with us. I might eventually push to switch us to Pro Tools LE now that 8 is so good and MBox Micro's are so cheap but that'll have to wait for when California gets out of bankruptcy. ;)

So er, a, before I make a decision to buy from a competitor........do you have the cubase 5 upgrade?

Thanks for keeping us in mind. Hurry and get it from Audiomidi while you can as they may not have it for much longer. Tell them that you want them to match JRR's $179 price. We used to have the Updates but we sold out and now Steinberg has decided only to sell it direct.

What file? Move to where? What MIDI delay? Can you be more specific?
Cheers.

Hmmm...it's been a while since I had to set it all up, but I'll give my creaky old memory a run out.

It's called Midireportfilter or something like that (I can't even remember what the bloody thing is called now, or what suffix file it is :x )

And now I can't even remember which bloody folder it's installed in - but you have to move it one folder further up. i.e from whichever subfolder it's in up into the main CubaseSX folder - of course it won't be called the CubaseSX folder now, so I imagine it'll be called Cubase5 or similar.

You know...I think I'll stop now because I just re-read what I wrote and it doesn't even make sense to me. :hihi:

Look up at Cubase.net. It should be in a stickie thread somewhere in the main Cubase forum. Might be under midi delays, midi timestamp, or Midireportfilter (or whatever it's actually called... ). Certainly there were thousands of threads all about midi delays.

I think it's someone else's turn now. I've just confused the poor bastard more I think...I know I confused myself. It's one of the manylittle reasons I don't always hate the Cubase haters, because actually Steinberg are a bunch of complete idiots when they do silly errors like this one.

As to what it actually does - if you don't move the file, many users (not all, strangely) find that some but not all midi notes are delayed by quite a noticeable time. It's a similar thing to if you have a really large latency set with your soundcard. Press a key, wait half a second and then the note actually plays. It's not a bug as such...this file does what it's supposed to do, but simply isn't recognised when it's installed where the installer puts it. Which begs the question why the **** Steinberg haven't got around to simply correcting the installer - as Berfab pointed out - it's been well known since SX2.

It really is dead easy to fix though. As I said - you just drag the file one folder up.

The Steinberg midi port filter is used for bypassing emulated midi ports that are created by windows. here is some info:

http://knowledgebase.steinberg.net/95_1.html

bottom line:

if one you want to disable windows emulated ports, remove (or just move) the included files in the 'midi port enabler' folder that resides in the installation path.

Best,
midi.

Yeah...what he said. :hihi:

Certainly made more sense than me. I looked briefly around Cubase.net and couldn't find the info, so thanks for posting the link.

Also I note that in the FAQ section there's:
7. Any "Known Issues"?
"Known Issues" are listed in the document "Issues & Solutions" that can be found on the Cubase 4 installation disc.
As usual updated "Issues & Solutions" lists will come with according update patches.
The sort of thing on an installer that most people ignore with a passion. But probably should be read with a fine-tooth comb.

Ah hem...

From my studio wall:

1. Browse to the Cubase SX/SL/SE/4/5 or Nuendo application folder (usually C:/programs/steinberg/...) and locate the folder "MIDI Port Enabler"

2. Open this folder

3. Pick the file "ignoreportfilter" and move it into the application folder (one directory up)

4. Start Cubase SX/SL/SE/4/5/etc. or Nuendo

Done.
