I don't have GB5 yet, but adding an AU instrument has always been a bit of a drag. One first has to create a "preset" that contains the AU instrument. Here's an article on this:

Please let em know if this helps.
Is GB5 the same as GarageBand '09?
Cheers,
Urs

So, is GarageBand 5 the same as GarageBand '09?
What other Synthesizer plugin are you using in GB?

Yes GarageBand 5 is GarageBand '09. The only other synth is iDrum.Urs wrote:So, is GarageBand 5 the same as GarageBand '09?

Hello my Friends,
I don't know if I can help but this is how I do it:
Go to software instruments and select something like Synth Basics. It won't matter which you select, that's just where you will save Zebra to. Now click on Details below then select Zebra from the list in "Instrument Generator:". All AU synth plugins installed properly will be listed so just scroll down till you find it. Once you have it click on the little crayon looking icon to the right. That will make the Zebra GUI come up. Find the preset you want Zebra to have when you select it and go to the bottom and click the "Save Instrument..." button, name it what you want, and you can now just select Zebra from one of the instruments in Synth Basics. You'll still need to click the crayon icon though to get to the GUI.
Zebra will come up with the preset it was saved with and if you tweak anything it will ask you to save the instrument. You can overwrite or create another. While the GUI is present you can click above the GUI where is says 'manual' and you will see 'Make Preset' listed to save presets into GB so you can load them from there--from GarageBand. That way you won't need the GUI just to select the sound you want. These are different as what you did before was make an instrument. It won't matter as the tracks you make will remember what you had programed anyway and will show exactly what you were doing with the GUI at the time you saved your song.
Gee-- I hope I didn't confuse things much.
Take Care,

Yes, Make sure you have the Zebra2 component in the correct folder.
Library/Audio/Plug-ins/components
Double click an instrument icon in a track, then see "generator" and click that. It should just be under "generator", then scroll down to see it.

Oh good, Mildwind!
Glad I could help you. I hope you enjoy Zebra as much as I do. You could spend the rest of your life exploring this thing and it would alway have a surprise that will bring a smile. The only bad thing I found is that sometimes it makes me feel like I might have wasted money on the other soft-synths I have, but I get over that. It's not really a bad thing. I could live fine with just Zebra though. GarageBand too is capable of a lot and has very pretty instruments (actually, very good synths) that will go with Zebra very well. And it all works splendidly!
Have fun,
joji

Phewwww!
Thanks joji! - I was almost about to upgrade iLive to verify if Zebra works. These things *are* a bit quircky in GarageBand, they should at least add a makro "add track with AU instrument" in some menu...
Cheers,
Urs

Hi Urs,
I believe Apple has a winner with GarageBand and it's getting better all the time. We need a host that is this simple.
Yes, they could make getting to AU's a little simpler but it's not so bad once you see what the designer is doing. Like video games these things are difficult until you see the way the designer is thinking then you win. A bit frustrating at first but then we say "Ah-ha!" and the logic-- or should I say "way"-- of it is usually consistent.
Glad to help, Urs, you work so much!
Have a very good day!
