I think a CPU upgrade for V-Rack will not be necessary.

Hi all.
I'm after reading every single post trying to get some idea of how the V-Machine will suite my needs and I'm none the wiser. If anything I've learned that it's nowhere near what I expected, but since my needs are very specific and there is talk of a future CPU upgrade, I was hoping someone could answer a few questions for me based on the unit as it stands right now.
All I want to run on the V-Machine is Sample Lord and a reverb effect. Nothing else.
So with that in mind.....
Q1: What is the expected overall poly count for a single sound playing.
Q2: I will want to use more than one sound at the same time on different channels. Is this possible and if so can I use all 16 ?
Q3 If question 2 is a yes, does the overall poly still say the same or will I drop in overall notes due to the additional complexity of using more than one sound. Or does other CPU problems become an issue.
Q4: I read one guy could not load a single sound large than 300MB, is that true ?. Is that a per sound limit, or the entire limit of what the V-Machine can do.
Kind Regards.
Sharp.

Yes.Q2: I will want to use more than one sound at the same time on different channels. Is this possible and if so can I use all 16 ?
The available polyphony is shared with all instruments, so if you're holding the sustain pedal on a pad which is playing a 9 note chord, you can play the remaining ~55 notes with other sounds on the other channels.Q3 If question 2 is a yes, does the overall poly still say the same or will I drop in overall notes due to the additional complexity of using more than one sound. Consider that a 16 bit sample on file will become a 32 bit sample once loaded into memory, so since the V-Machine has only 512Mb of RAM, if you try to load more than ~200 Mb of 16bit samples, these will take ~400Mb of RAM...
On the other hand, Samplelord is able to stream sample from disk and only preload into memory little portions of samples.
You should be careful when setting the right values.

Did anybody test the v-machine with plugins created with synth edit?
It is unclear from the sm pro audio page if the mac version allows me to control the v-machine plugins via an audio unit plugin (i.e. from logic).
If these two things work it might well be worth the money.

Thanks ZioKiller for taking the time to answer my questions.
Much appreciated, and it seems then that the V-Machine is exactly what I'm after. Ordered one today.
Regards.

common, what's not right for you does not mean it is not right for others, in fact a high % of users use the v-machine for what it is and understand the functionality, what else could give them this portability or stability ? nothing else.. no other hardware device out there including laptops. This is a simple fact. I use it as an effects processor running IK CSR for live shows. Others use it as a DJ effects processor and trigger samples and loops, others use it as a piano, organ, synth.delafuerte wrote:Oh my god!!!Sharp wrote:Thanks ZioKiller for taking the time to answer my questions.

In the meantime, another week without any update or news about the CPU upgrade.

Seriously regarding the CPU upgrade for the V, we are testing several boards (the internal CPU board) at the moment to see what will work properly (without any heat issues) and what will be the cost of it as well. I am unsure if people would spend $175 for doubling the CPU power or not right now or hold off a little longer to have something around $100 to do this with extra ram. As you can see we don't have and don't want to have any hardware issues so we do extensive testing of this. Technically we cannot use more then 9watt to 10watt of power for the CPU otherwise you will get stability issues and heat issues in live situation under lights or in the sun.delafuerte wrote:Cm'on Danny...it's a little sarcasmVFXAU wrote: common, what's not right for you does not mean it is not right for others, in fact a high % of users use the v-machine for what it is and understand the functionality, what else could give them this portability or stability ?![]()

Hi delafuerte.

Do you disagree with the answers to my questions ?.
If I can get 64 notes from the V-Machine running Samplelord streaming and a single reverb effect, then I will be in heaven.
I have the KORG OASYS and as a controller it's got everything you could want. As a workstation however it does not support streaming of samples or any popular formats, so this is the gap I hope the V-Machine will fit for me.
When the CPU upgrade is released I'll jump for that too, but I've made my purchase now based on the poly count that ZioKiller mentioned, and I will be very very happy with that.
64 Notes poly is a lot. Heck I sequenced all our songs at one point on a KORG Trinity and that only had 32 notes and I never ran into problems.
Kind Regards.

the v-machine is a funny little box. it is like vfxau said. but delafuerte is right with the software. more than 2.5 month and no update. the software/firmware has some seriuous bugs (but the v-machine is stable). so the next update have to have a lot of bugfixing and tons of new features.

By coincidence I saw this little box, O.K. it's not a VSTI player but it's the hardware that counts. dual core, small enough, no heating problems,...
http://www.ripnas.com
Memory: 1GB / 2GB (secure model)
CPU: Intel Atom 1.6 GHz [dual core]++
Environmental: 16 - 19 dBA (fan-less design)
Size: 24 x 25 x 8.9 cm 9.4 x 9.8 x 3.5 inches
Weight: 5 KG 11 lbs (Nett)
Construction: Aluminium, Steel, Acrylic
Power: 110VAC - 240AVC, 20W idle usage
Remove the CDrom, put a quality sound card in it, an LCD and there you have the Vmachine2

you need a host that run on windows home server
or you have to put a new OS on these box. and it costs a lot. you have a harddrive
.
i dont know if that a perfect vst-player ...
it cost as much a the little receptor will cost (as i remember ).

On the Vmachine runs an optimized debian linux kernel. It should run on this box too after some modifications.
A hard drive is not a problem and is reliable if you have two of them mirrored (raid1).
If the price is as expensive as the small receptor...
Let's make it a Vmachine ProMini
