Hi,

in the thread http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=248634
there was a discussion about the best electric piano sound.

There was a midi-file posted:
http://f.imagehost.org/download/0366/Op ... e_stripped

Based on a midi file created by Optomadic I made a several sound examples which you can download as a zip file:

http://www.power-xs.net/download/epianoshootout.zip

There are 5 fx and 5 nofx examples. With the fx examples I used a self-created preset of Izotope Trash (download: http://www.power-xs.net/download/LLBest.xml). As instruments I used:

- the famous soundfont of Jeff Learman (rhodes mark 1)
- the rhodes mark 2 of the Kontakt 3 library
- A factory preset of Lounge Lizard V2 (which demonstrates how weak the feactory presets of LLV2 were)
- 2 self-made Lounge Lizard V2 presets - one trying to create my ideal of an electric piano and one more centered on realism (which maybe show why I so far was reluctant to upgrade to V3 since I use the pickup model 1 which is no more present but gives imo the best sound)

It would be nice if other users also posted examples using this midi file so that we have an opportunity of fair comparison of various electric piano sounds (be it sampling libs or physical models).

cheers, akj

cool thread! the LL2 preset sounds indeed strange in comparison..

What proceedure did you use? Any compression or other effects? Did you tweek the midi file?

Post

the nofx files have no processing at all, just the midi-file (untweaked) played and bounced, the "trashed" files have iZotope Trash with a self-made preset applied. All files were finally normalised to 98% (just to make sure that there is not too much difference in volume)

for those who happen to have Trash I uploaded the preset:

The harsh one ;)..

Looks like OTR88 and PT3 have been stricken from the books of credibility.. Or was it authenticity??

I've been playing with the Scarbee EP instruments for Kontakt. They are SWEET. No joke.
That said, I love the flexibility of Lounge Lizard EP-3 + it sounds great to me. OTR88 wasn't my cup of tea really, but with a little tweaking it can sound real nice too. Still dig MrRay22 a lot as well, it's hard to beat value for money on that one since it's so cheap :D

Sure, I'll try to find some time soon, but I can't promise anything. Doesn't look like it'll be before the weekend.

The mid-hi velocity layer can sound strange when chorded. Theres noticeable doubling happening there almost like a short delay with no feedback. Is that a dry recording?
