Initial versions of the hi-hat were called clangers

"Sock" or "Sock Cymbal" was also used at one point.

EDIT: Is there such a thing as a low-hat? or a mid-hat?

Answer: The low-hat was the direct predecessor of the hi-hat. The low-hat was similar to the hi-hat, but rested only a few inches off the ground, and therefore could be played only with the foot.

(affectionately) "haitsu" or "haikka" in Finnish.

Something nice about Wiki articles: select another language in the left menu of an article and you get the translation.

Nice find here:
  • French: Cymbales "Charleston"
  • Bosnian : Fus

My "hihat" sounds isnt really hihats at all.
Mostly filtered whitenoise stuff with a percussive envelope.

I try to make browsing sounds faster/more efficient
