EDIT: Is there such a thing as a low-hat? or a mid-hat?

Answer: The low-hat was the direct predecessor of the hi-hat. The low-hat was similar to the hi-hat, but rested only a few inches off the ground, and therefore could be played only with the foot.

My "hihat" sounds isnt really hihats at all.
Mostly filtered whitenoise stuff with a percussive envelope.

I try to make browsing sounds faster/more efficient

hah, I guessed it was for preset names, as I often have the same problem. How about calling it as it sounds, e.g. "kshhh" or "tsih"?

as a french speaker, I also use the term "charleston" for the hihats.

"Rajoute donc quelques décibels à 10kHz sur cette charleston, s'il te plait, Jacques"

Alternative name for hihat?
