RMX - controlling stop/play using computer keyboard?

Hey guys,

My oldish USB controller keyboard doesn't have stop and play buttons, and there aren't really any buttons I can use for those functions. I have a computer keyboard in my rig, and I'm wondering if there's some way of using that...?

Hi, Watto. I'm just answering 'cause nobody else did-something better than nothin'. I don't remember if I can do this generically or not, but if the RMX edit window is open, why can't you just click on the start buttin (or do you need keystroke rather than mouse?) If that's the case, I'm not sure, but I thought it was possible.

I can't remember the part about mapping the 'Play' button to a controller.

There is also a trigger mode in RMX where you can trigger loops from individual keys on your Midi Keyboard. Not quite a latch, like hitting the 'Play' button, but it is pretty convenient in its own right.

Yeah, I've tried both methods, but I didn't want to have the RMX window open just to press play (can't remember why, to be honest, but I was doing something else while the loop was playing). If I could set RMX to latch when triggered by a key, and then stop when the same key is hit again, I'd be happy with that, but I don't think it works that way.

No, but with an Axiom board, you could set the drum triggers or sequence controller strip buttons to do exactly that...

Ah - might have to consider that. Do the drum triggers or sequence controller strip buttons send on all channels, or can you assign a channel? At the moment I've got each instrument "live" on a separate channel, and I'm switching MIDI channels to play each. There's probably a better way, yeah?

The M-Audio Axiom is capable of doing everything you want, if you spend enough time programming it... Also, it is small (25, 49 and 61-key versions) and light-weighted. The only issue (for me) is the very light keyboard action.

Demierra beat me to it. The Axiom works great for this sort of thing. Check out the Axiom Pro, though - costs more, but PERHAPS the keyboard is better (have not seen one, so I don't know, but the literature implied it was a better action. If anyone HAS one and would like to comment? - separate thread, please, don't want to hijack...)

Again if you want to use your computer keyboard you can probably find a key mapper for this kind of thing. I've seen it before can't remember where.

I must say, I'm quite amazed there isn't a standard way of doing this - I would have thought many Receptor users would have wanted to start and stop RMX! I've decided, rather than buy a new keyboard, to use an external looping pedal, as that means I can start and stop at will, while still using Receptor for other sounds.
