Uhbik surround

Hi Urs,
So I was pretty excited about the surround processing of the Uhbiks (not that I have actually created anything of value in surround yet)
But so far it's been a no go. In Reaper, my main audio host, I have NEVER been able to get anything other than stereo showing up. I've tried lots of things, making the tracks multichannel, feeding Uhbik via a multichannel panner, switching Uhbiks mode, etc.. nothing works.
Then I tried Vegas, hoping for something better. In Vegas, when Uhbik opens it DOES show up in surround mode. (the indicators show the surround icons). But as soon as the audio starts the icons switch back to stereo. ARG.
Anyone had multichannel success in these hosts?
I would settle for a hard-wired surround version of the plugins if that's easier to make compatible.

Haven't tried it with these hosts but they work fine in Cubase and Nuendo..
so maybe its just the sequencer configuration maybe.. do you got a true 5.1 master channel ffor example?
and if i understand right you created an audio 5.1 track?where you have inserted an uhbik?
then it should actualy work..
hope that helps a little..

Well, the thing is that many, many hosts only make rudimentary support of VST's surround features. Unless a host actively provides the Uhbiks with a so-called "Speaker Arrangement", I can not assume any other than having a host that's oblivious to Surround and multichannel operation.
The problem is, if I simply assume that the host is multichannel aware without the Speaker Arrangement, the Uhbiks will crash in dozens of hosts that are completely oblivious to anything else than stereo.
However, I'm working on a set of little "hacks" that let you enable certain internal settings per host. This way you can tell Uhbiks to ignore whatever the host says (or forgets to say) and force things to work your way. This is an ongoing development though...
Cheers,
Urs

thanks Urs, for the quick reply.
I figured that was the case. I honestly wasn't surprised that Reaper didn't work right.. it has multichannel in the sense of multichannel audio streams, but not in the sense of surround mixing support. But yes, I'm inserting the plugins onto 6 and/or 8 channel tracks.
Vegas I was more surprised at, because it actually has surround mixing etc.
I can try to put a FR in over at the Reaper forums if I know what to ask for. People frequently request more multichannel support. So I need to request the host provides the VST a "speaker arrangement". is there an actual spec for this floating around anywhere?
I can also ask what Reaper might currently be expecting/providing to plugins. It can definitely provide N channels of audio to a plugin, or receive N channels of output from one. So there must be a way to make things happy.

Yeah, all they need for Uhbik to work is be able to set a Speaker Arrangement, like 5.1. Once they do that, we should be all set. I can check however what they do myself. There's always a good chance that I have a bug, too

I'm working on a VST wrapper to send the correct informations. It should be out in few days.

I have just posted the following topic on the REAPER forum HERE about this issue and am REALLY hoping something can be done about this:
I have just received a discount voucher for u-he and have decided to give the Uhbik plugins a test run, especially given they support surround audio up to eight channels (great for Ambisonics) but I have only been able to get them working in stereo in REAPER no matter how I set up the channels.
I did a Google search and discovered something about REAPER not reporting surround channel counts (or something of that ilk) and that being the reason they only work in stereo. I'm not sure I understand that limitation though because I have plenty of other plugins here that work fine in surround in REAPER (Waves, Native Instruments, Blue Ripple Sound and others).
This is a huge letdown for me, especially given the issue was raised six years ago and there seems to STILL be no solution.
I found THIS THREAD from a few years ago and found the VST wrapper tool that is supposed to fix this HERE but it crashed on my Win 10 machine as soon as I tried to load a VST into it.
Is there anything that can be done to resolve this issue of Uhbik and REAPER not getting along in surround?

We don't have a quick fix, but I have been reworking multi-i/o for our plug-ins. This was started for Repro-1 but it hasn't made it into the final feature set. I'll continue work after Repro's release.AusDisciple wrote:hoping something can be done about this:
What happened here was that in 2009 many hosts had serious issues with surround. There were many crashes because of that. My solution back then was to make Uhbiks stereo unless the host specifically calls for surround channel layouts. That was a good fix at that time, but it's also the culprit with your issue.
It was only last year that our Q&A department found out that Cubase/Nuendo is the *only* VST2 platform left that does so. Most other surround-capable hosts have moved to different means, like the way Reaper does it.
In short: We are aware of the problem, we are working von it, but we do not have certainty about a delivery date.
Would you be up to test things for us? It would be great if you could send our support guys an email -> support@u-he.com, so we can send you the fix during our internal testing cycle. Which is often months before we do a final release.

I didn't realise it but there's actually a configuration setting for individual plugins in REAPER now that enables it to inform the plugins when the channel count changes. I set that on with your Uhbik plugins and they now work in surround in REAPER.
Here's a direct link on the REAPER forum with an image of where that configuration setting is.... http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php? ... ost1761518
I'm not sure whether this is something that would change the development and testing procedure but I'm always up for helping test things if this is still necessary.
I have to say I am VERY impressed with Uhbik and have just used my voucher to make a purchase. Great quality and quite low CPU usage which is a big bonus when working in Ambisonic format with so many channels per track (16 audio channels for third order Ambisonics).
