I like this one best. The color helps it standout. One suggestion, the embossing at the top the inside corner is square it might look a bit more fluid if you place a litte square there with a -R rounded edge.

Thanks. :) I noticed that, too. But I didn't think about placing a square there with a rounded edge. It worked using the shape+ feature. SkinMan is so cool. :)

BTW, when I work on a UI, I may have the "workspace color" set to grey or black. The UI in that environment looks ok. But then if I export the image and, say, display it in a web browser that uses a white background, suddenly the UI looks too dark. I think this has something to do with the background contrasting with the UI.

The question I have is, should this affect the color choices of the UI? Should I choose the colors so that they look bright enough when the surrounding background color is white?

I think a noob mistake is to make the UI too big. I'm slowly learning ways to avoid this mistake. Using bold on the labels with all capital letters helps. Below is a new version of the reverb and super filter:

I agree!!! I think they are to big most of the time and have far to much wasted space for fancy and useless graphics. My view and my reasoning comes from skinning the reaktor instruments I make, due to this I always try to conserve monitor real estate as I will need to have several things open at one time and don't want to scroll to get to it. As far as plug-ins I hate moving them around so I can see what in going on in the sequencer...it makes me nuts when I Know the size of GUI of the plug is the real problem, it could have been smaller.

What I learned is this, if it can be smaller and remain clear it should be smaller, if it can be smaller but is not clear then fix it and make it smaller…not microscopic however no one should struggle to see it. I sit back in my chair with my feet on the desk if I can still make everything out it's the correct size and color. If I can't see it, I play with the color and opactiy first, then change the background some, if all that fails, then I increase the size slowly and with extreme moderation. Color choice plays a big role here its not just size; messing around with opacity can also help, don't try to have it at 100% all the time, lowering the opacity on a strong contrast can blend it and it can help reduce confusion among thing that full strength sometimes creates!

Font size will be a problem in Skinman, perhaps GIMP can avoid this problem if you need it smaller.

I was bored this morning so I decided to mess around with Skinman/knobman to see if I could emulated my Nano Kontrol (I love that little controler):

^ that looks great!

I changed the skin around some so that it's not an exact copy of the real hardware, close enough though.

I update the previous file with more knobs, switch, and fader. I created a scaled down version of the knobs so that only the knob is used, no extras or shadows. As before all .psd and knobman files are provided.

LedOffOn
Hi again ...

I went on for my led and thought to change behaviour from FrameMask to Alpha blending : It enables me to get smoothly appearing / vanishing indicators 8) .

Had several colors of leds so I made them all the same way.

ImageLed_Amber

ImageLed_Yellow

ImageLed_Green

Grab as you like :) !

This is a simple knob, but it uses a techinque I haven't tried before. The very top layer is a circle. It uses the Plasma texture with the depth turned all the way up. Also, the Alpha parameter in the color section is turned way down. This adds something like noise to the overall image. But the key is that I have this layer rotate just like the indictator line. The result is that the "noise" rotates when you turn the knob, giving it a more tactile feel. It's a subtle effect, but one that doesn't seem to be lost when you reduce the size of the knob.

You really have to "turn" the knob to get a sense of the effect; the still frames don't convey it.

Noisy Knob
oh man i search the entire DSP section page by page for finding this one i have lost!!

this 3d should be sticked IMHO..

A bit off topic

I am making a resource list of people that are able to create custom GUI's for my blog. This offer has been made privately and I am also making it public for anyone that wants to be included. If you are interested please have a webpage that displays your work and provide me with your preferred contact name and link to your webpage.

The reason that I am doing this is that I want to use my time to develop open source material that are freely available to everyone as I am no longer interested in doing customized GUI for particular projects. I do however want to promote others that are willing and capable and I felt a resource list cuts to the case and lead them to you. This does not mean that you have to offer free resources or services it simply aids in lead those in need a custom GUI to you.

If you would see my blog, please note that I am currenlty updating it so not everything is in place yet, and how I am doing this to determine if you wish to participate in this resource list please visit:

Thanks,
Jonathan Style
